I and DH made a skii run this morning, we were close to a local Dam and saw these school of birds, and most interesting were the nests....there were hundreds of them. Do these belong to the pretty birds?
CLOSED: Tree Swallows and Their Nests?
The nests belong to Cliff Swallows. Tree Swallows nest in hollow trees, old woodpecker holes, or nesting boxes.
Cliff Swallows in the pic too, note the orangey rump.

That's so very exciting that I found the interesting birds in such a large number. Thanks to both Gary and Resin. I'll return to the site hoping for a better pix of the birds this afternoon. Resin, I'll try to zoom in the pix and see if I can see them more in detail.
Lily,
Cliff Swallows nest colonially, often in large numbers. Along the Denali Hwy, Alaska nearly every bridge has a colony of Cliff Swallows nesting under the bridge. This is a picture I took of a Cliff Swallow colony in an 8 foot diameter culvert under the Denali Hwy, on Tuesday. This is an unusual location for a colony, I have ever seen nests in a culvert before.

Must be difficult for them to get their mud to stick to the metal! Looks like there's one or two have fallen off.
