Is anyone going to the Gesnariad Celebration event at USF in Tampa Florida in September? I certainly hope to be able to make it as it will be my first show and I will certainly have a wish list::) Pat
Gesnariad Celebration - USF - Tampa
If you like gesneriads other than african violets, You absolutely HAVE to go. To see the plants grown for show is something you will not believe! A lot of people that grow plants for show live in the florida area and you will be amazed at the wonderful plants. there will also be some starters of the same plants for sale. I went last Sept to one held at Selby Gardens by Tampa Bay and I think Suncoast gessie group. It was amazing and as good as going to a convention, there were a LARGE number of entries. There will be african violets in the show, but not too many although they will be very nice ones. There were a LOT of violets for sale though. This event will probably be much like the one I had attended. I was so very glad I went. You will find plants you don't see very many places. Also the people are very helpful with questions about the plants. It if very fun to be around a bunch of people as enthusiastic about plants as myself, so maybe you will enjoy that too. OH and there are surprisingly number of show plants for sale as well.
I don't know, if I went, I would have to stay overnight and its about 6-8 hr drive one way. There is also something in Tenn that same weekend, I might go up there, it is closer for me and could be a one day trip. Have to wait til Sept to decide if I'm even going to either one. They sure are fun, so there is a good chance I will go to one or the other.

I am really looking forward to it Trish. I hope to find some uncommon ones to bring home. Thanks for the info! Pat
You realize that Nichole and I only wish we were 6 or 8 hours from some convention of gesneriads...............it takes me 12 hours just to get out of state and we don't seem to have much of a gesneriad society in Texas (at least I don't know about one)
Well you guys can come down here if you don't mind sleeping with my 6 animals who are very friendly:) I will check your purses before you leave to be sure you haven't pinched any of my plants! LOL!
Pat
You know me well, Pat!!! I have a friend visiting me right now and we cut back every begonia I have so she can take the cuttings home and root in water. Pinching plants is the best thing I do ^_^
One time I was at the mall and I saw this giant coleus and I just wanted to pinch a little piece off. On the way home I had my husband drive by it and I just stuck my hand out to get a little piece but the car was moving and the piece did not break off and I did not let go and the entire 3 foot plant, roots and all, came flying through the window along with a bunch of soil. My family thought this was absolutely hysterical, but I just wanted my husband to drive away really fast before the Coleus Mall Security Police came and got me!

Pat... that made my morning! ROFLMAO!!!!!!
Pat, you are as clumsy as I am when trying to get a 'pinch' of something.........really funny!!
Has anyone received their new Gesneriad Society Magazine? It is completely dedicated to both species and hybrid episcias. Just fabulous looking and an article by Thad Scaggs!!! His article is showing how to hybridize them.
I'm glad you guys liked that one:)
I did get the Gesneriad mag and the articles in there were wonderful! I am hoping to come up with an episcia at the show.
The only problem with this hobby is that even a small collection increases at a very frightening rate. Oh well, at least I am not a drug addict, LOL!
Pat
That is what I tell my family.........there are worse addictions than plants^_^
got that right, that story is still got me lauging. lol
bonnie
Me Too,LOLOL!!
OMG, what a funny story zozzl....you all better be careful, though, last time I fessed up on one of these forums to "pinching", the plant police came out of the woodwork to lecture me on stealing. They didn't even have the guts to do it as themselves, they created a new account to tell me anonymously, probably just in case they ever wanted to bum some cuttings off me in the future. (yeah, I know who it was)
I have more than a few plants grown from pinched cuttings, some say they grow the best!
Yes, I have heard about the plant police. I guess I never worried too much about a little pinch in the parking lot because they change those plants out several times a year and just toss them. I swear I have never done it in nursery, LOL!
