Yam's gone to sproats

Greenacres, WA

I have several Yam's that have sprouted what would be the best way to get some more out of them? I heard that they gave to grow in sandy soil. What would be the best soil for them, do they need it to be hot weather to have them grow good.
I am in Spokane WA
Thanks

Most people in the United States use the terms yam and sweet potato interchangeably. The two are actually different vegetables. Yams are sub-tropical plants that are mainly imported to the United States. They really cannot be grown in the United States. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, are a vining crop that are grown in the south eastern United States. Some varieties, such as Georgia Jett, have shorter growing times (100 days) so gardeners as far north as zone 7 could try them. Sweet potatoes require care initially but are fairly easy to grow once they are established. The trick to growing great sweet potatoes is soil preparation.
