Second nesting

Stafford, VA

This is the second nest for my bluebird pair this year. I have been traveling and have not regularly checked on them. There were 4 eggs on June 23 when I took a short trip to Kansas. When I returned I found these guys - 4 nestlings on the 4th of July. This is the photo I took this afternoon. I was so glad to see the hatch when I returned on the 4th that I messed up the focus on the real little bird shots.

My little family of 4 fledglings left the nest successfully yesterday (July 23). I saw the first fly from the nest to a nearby tree with the parents right behind at about 8:30 AM. I watched as 2 others came into and out of the box entry to check out how far it was to the ground, who was in the neighborhood, etc. but they didn't leave the nest. Then I had to leave the house for a doctor's appointment. I did not get a photo of these birds.

When I returned a few hours later, I checked the nest and found it empty. The little ones had left and I did not get a photo of the fledging again. But I am happy that they grew successfully and are out in the world. We did have a young one out on the porch on the shepherd's hook this morning but my wife could not get the camera in time to get a shot of him/her.

I will clean the box and set it out again but I believe that it is too late for another brood.
