question about Physan 20

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I have some of my violets on capillary mats, and some on grids. They are all wicked. I want to use physan 20, but don't know how much to 1 gallon of water. Do I use it just in the trays with the grids, or can I use it in the ones with the mats too? Here in Florida, I'm so afraid of breeding mosquitos that I don't want to start raising them in my violets. We are going to NY in August when my oldest granddaughter gets married, and will be gone for about 10 days. I'm hoping the violets survive. I figure if I fill up the trays to the top, they will be allright. The ones on the mats have me worried. Maybe I'll shut the lights off on those and cover the small ones with a dome. I'm hoping that works. At least with the physan in the trays, I won't worry about the mosquitos.

Many, many years ago, we had fish tanks set up in an extra bedroom. My hubby was in charge of the tanks. One summer, the motor or filter stopped working, and we found out when we had mosquitos in every room of the house when we started getting bit. We were 'raising' families of them in one of the tanks. The fish were gone and the mosquitos took over. Don't want to repeat that again.

oh wow, that was a bummer. I use physian 20 all the time.I use a tablespoon to a 2 gallon tank.I would not fill a tray to the top with water for any plants, i think thats way to much water. you are wicking? i would make sure these plants have some water & then maybe dome them.

Hi Eileen! Missing you in Farmtown-I visit your farm every day! LOL! There's no mosquitos in Farmtown. I use 1 teaspoon/gal. of Physan 20, but I don't wick w/mats, and I've never left them for any length of time since I started wicking. Grandaughter getting married--wow! That's something! Congrats!

phoebesviolets, I don't get to Farmtown very often. Too busy with violet and hoya forums. LOL. Was there this morning collection trees and animals, but don't really know what to do with all the animals. I need a corral fence and can't figure out how to get it. LOL. I'd rather play in my plants.

Eileen,
I don't know how many AVS you have, but you can group them on damp mats (not wet) and put them in the bathtub and other places and cover them with plastic.Just make sure to leave the air on.

I'm taking in all your suggestions, and will do as you say. I hope I don't loose too many. Thanks for al the information.

Just this week our club president gave me a secret as to how she lives for long periods of time to go to all the conventions she goes to.

She told me to turn all the gro lights off..........then go to Walmart and buy those plastic shower liners and hang them around all my gro light stands. On the top of the stands she just uses pieces of the poly that painters use .

I always try to figure out a way to leave the lights on........but she says no........just to make mini greenhouses for them and water well but not overwater before I leave town.

Just passing on as I have not tried this..............

Gail, what a GREAT IDEA!. I'm running to wallyworld tomorrow and picking up some liners. I never thought of that. That should work really well. I'll pick up some hooks too, and get it all set up. Then all I'll have to do is hook them up. We are going to try to shorten our trip to less than 7 days if possible. It's our hurricaine season and my hubby doesn't want to be away too long. I have lots of plants around the pool, and he's afraid if we get a storm, they will end up in pool. There is way too many to bring closer to house, and I won't bring them in because of the 'creepy crawlers' and ants this time of year. In the winter it's not too big a problem. I just cover them with blankets to protect them from the cold. Summer is another problem. We we know a storm or hurricaine is approaching, we drag most of everything into garage. The very large planters in the corners have to stay put. They are too heavy to move.
I'll keep you posted as to how it works.

Please let us know when you get back as to how your indoor stands fared...........Have a good time!

We give you full permission to send a hurricane our way. None are predicted and we realize that a hurricane may be the only way we get out of this drought.
