My DH came home from work today with 6 day old chicks. He was told they were Barred Rocks and Silkies. What do you think?
Any ideas as to breed?
What wonderful pic of your little girl's, both are darling. Looks like a bunch of silkies to me, I'm still looking for the barred rocks. Hay
The ones with the head spots are the barred Rocks--you are supposed to be able to get a good idea of the sex by the relative "tightness" or diffusion of the head spot. Girls have tight well defined spots and darker legs and are darker generally. Boys have more diffuse spots, lighter legs and tend to be lighter overall. This also works with Cuckoo Marans. But you need to have both sexes to see the difference.
Are they suppose to be barred Rock/Silkie crosses? Silkies should have five toes, feathered legs and not have normal flight feathers. The only ones I can see well all look like barred Rocks--even if they were Rock/Silkie crosses you should have some extra toes here and there and leg feathers.
I don't think the fella my DH got them from was sure. My DH said that he was told some were Barred Rock and some were Silkies, but I thought Silkies had feathered feet. I didn't count toes. But I'll do that as soon as I get a chance and will also have to take better pictures. Some of their faces are so pretty with little white lines under their eyes. They all seem to have light colored legs except one whose legs are sort of black.
I'm going to guess you might have a couple of Barred Rock's there. I remember that ours as a chick had a light area on the top of the head and white or light chest area. So I'm going to guess that a couple of them are.
My BF's daughter loved our Barred Rock.
I agree that some of them look like Barred Rocks. But the white is more diffuse than any of my pullets have been. Are they supposed to be pullets?
i see no silkies pictured, i see barred rocks(spots) and the brown headed no spots look like dark cornish or partridge rocks we used to have can't remember which now but they maybe something else. yes silkies r feather footed ur babies all look clean legged from what i see, should have black skin and 5 toes.
here is some silkie chicks i hatched from my girls hope it helps show ya the difference in breed.
silkie
ignore the bright yellow chick to right of the partridge silkie in the middle it is a salmon favorolles baby. sorry didn't realize another breed was in there.
