I am surprsed that until now, no one
has mentioned
the earthquakes
that have been occurring in the
North Texas area.
Has anyone felt any?
!!! Q U A K E S !!!
Nope, not here (Hurst). I understand there was one in Euless, just a handful of miles away from me but either I was working or it was a really weak one because I do not remember anything unusual.
i haven't felt anything-- or if i did i guess i thought it was thunder!
My daughter was in Haltom City and thought she felt one a few weeks ago. She came home pretty quick and does not want to go back anytime soon. We have baby pigs on the ground so that makes it even harder to go for visits. Kathy
You know, my sister lives in the area down there and works for the county. She hasn't mentioned it to me, think I will ask her today when she comes up if I remember.
Somethin' about the good ol' solid ground movin' or trembling that is very disturbing to us,..huh? I was stationed near Los Angeles, while in the Army years ago,....and will never forget the awesome experience of a 6.7(I'm thinkin' maybe a little less probable).. quake (epicenter - San Fernando Valley area)
Isn't it interesting that within the past dozen years or so.....that as the "fracturing" (and/or drilling) of the Barnett Shale formation in y'all's area,..has roughly tripled ,.......the increase of tremors has roughly tripled,..as well. Additionally,...if what I read is correct,...the epicenter of each recent quake is basically the same location!
Call me a stick in the mud,....but I'm very sceptical of claims by the "professionals" (particularly those who are tied to the Corporations/Companies whose fortunes are derived/supplemented by this practice)....specifically,...the claims that the "drilling" or "fracturing" is NOT responsible for the quakes. My apologies,....but I can't help but shake my head,....when I read or hear this.
No,....I am not a geologist...nor a seismologist....but I have had some experience as a "John Doe" subjected to the deception contrived by
various "Big Businesses" which are not inclined to accept responsibility for the effects of their endeavors - (ESPECIALLY those involved in the production of chemicals, fuels and all products related to fossil fuels)
Yes,...... I have used,.... do use,....and will continue to use the products resulting from these productions.....but I guess I'm tired of what seems to be a lack of "true" accountability when you examine the various "ill effects" created - whether they're quakes or (more importantly) pollution.

I felt two quakes many years ago out in West Texas (Big Spring). The first one was in the late 1970's, and the second in the mid-to-late 1980's. I remember being surprised back then that there wasn't more interest in them. The first one rattled the dishes in my cabinets. At the time of the second one I worked in a multi-story building, and people felt it more the higher up they were when it happened.
Here is an interesting website that shows all US Quake activity for the past week. I peek at it once week or so - it's surprising how very common earthquakes actually are. I guess it is just that they seldom do damage so they are not newsworthy.

The strangest sensation that I remember,...was the "solid" ground moving as though it were anything but that......and the following aftershocks....which would repeat some of that sensation. Not tryin' to be funny......it was somewhat of a "moving" experience. Made me feel
a little awestruck by such power!
i felt one in indiana years back and remember being in the yard and my husband and i looking at each other like--what the #@%#@ was that?!
as for the dishes rattling----i lived near the tracks when i was young and we were so used to the passenger trains that we didn't even notice them anymore--but the dishes did rattle and visitors had that same "what the #@%$#@ was that?"
I live in Johnson County, TX, and supposedly we've had 6 or 7 earthquakes in the last couple of months but we never felt a thing. Now our homeowners insurance company has sent us a letter trying to sell us earthquake insurance!!! We have been told for years that there is a fault line running through this area but nothing serious like California. The way this clay soil moves and cracks open in the summer, causing bad foundation problems all around town, my DH has always said that we live with an "earthquake in slow motion."
DNP
LOL! An "earthquake in slow motion" is right - I can't believe the deep cracks on our lot!
I didn't know we were having quakes in the area. I haven't felt any, so they must be very mild.
I grew up on the San Andreas fault and one of my earliest memories is from when I was probably three or four - I was sitting on the grass in the front yard and the ground was moving. Later when I lived in the East Bay area of San Francisco, rollers and shakers and jolters were common.
When we were in the Navy, hubs and I were on the way to our new duty station at Lemoore, CA and we'd stopped at a La Quinta for the night. He woke me up very early because the big wrought iron chandelier in the room was going crazy. I told him it was just an earthquake, go back to sleep, a response that shocked him almost as much as the earthquake itself.
Tornadoes scare me much more than earthquakes.
earth quake in slow motion is right! those cracks can open pretty wide over a long dry summer in texas!
We have water barrels that have spouts to water our pigs. One day I went to fill them and the was a small rat snake in it. i removed him promptly and let him on the ground. He immediately went into one of those cracks and disappeared. How interesting, using them for safe transit, and cooler travel as well :) Kathy near Abilene
Fila~I used to work with a guy from Merkel and my DH is from Abilene! What a small world!
DNP~I'm surprised you haven't "felt the earth move" yet! LOL From the news reports, you'd think each one was a major earthquake!
quilter_gal - that sensation I mentioned.....I think must have been a "roller" type....'cause that would describe the sensation I experienced.....and remember so well....kinda like sitting in a chair,...feeling the earth(and chair-myself) slightly rise up,....move over a few inches,...sink back down and shift back to the original location....best I can describe it
Steph, I live north of merkel, too many animals and would live in a tent before i lived in a town. Abilene is getting more and more crowded, but nothing like your area. I was born in Abilene, so have not gone too far :) Yes, a small world indeed. Kathy
