Cute Chick Kassy {;~)

Catscan you're a stitch!

They are related. The fluffy cuteness is intentionally deceptive. If you could see inside the mind of kassy's adorable little peep--you would shudder.

Catscan, porkpal, that actually was a live chick............LOL
I had to dig through some of my old pictures to find that pic :)

Transitional phase: Giant Prehistoric Terror Bird of Argentina. I think you can see the resemblance. Kassy should be extremely careful. The cuter they are (and hers is truly adorable) the greater the risk of not taking the threat seriously.

Kassy-- I am relieved to learn you are no longer in danger.

LOL catscan...
That was when they use to sell baby chicks at easter time. They would color them in pink, blue, green, yellow, I'm thinking maybe purple too. Too long ago, can't remember what all the colors were.
Then they would sell them at easter time for kids. I'm surprised as many survived as did.
The Poor chicks :(....People didn't know how to take care of them, so I'm sure the majority of them died :(
Most of the people that I knew that got them lived in town, and I lived in the country. So when they no longer wanted them, they would ask if we would take them.
One year I ended up taking in 6 and the following year, I bought 2 because I knew I would be getting at least one more if not more, and that year I ended up with 7.
I don't think they are allowed to do it anymore here.

This is what they grew up into :)
And guess what? They did a great job of sexing them back then, because they were all roosters!
Catscan. here is a video on them

Hi kassy. They are cute no matter what colour they are. Someone on the Forum tried colouring some chicks (you do it in the egg!) but it did not work out well. He didn't do it to sell them--just to see if the method worked. I think it is illegal in a lot of places--mostly because, as you say, the wrong people buy them as novelties.

Yours did turn out well!

You can still buy them here. Every year we've got cute little spring colored chicks. I was told that they hold their beak & dip them in watery dye tho.. I've never heard that they did it in the shells. I ended up with all hens when i got mine one year. They color bunnies & ducks here too. You can actually order them as day old chicks from a couple of the hatcheries.

I think doing it in the egg is pretty common. They use white breeds and you can see their flight feathers come out normally. Here is a site discussing doing it as a school project.

OMG greykyttyn, how did you end up with all hens when in 2 years time I had 13 and they where all roosters.................LOL
You where lucky there ;-)

:) i'm good at picking hens? I've never had a roo till this year.. & now i've got 10. but i wanted roo's so its ok i guess. I picked part of these out as roos when i bought them. I just kinda look at them in the box.. watch them.. then pic the ones that look either girlish.. or look like an impertinent lil boy. I did mess up on my welsummers.. but i didn't know about the colors on them. I picked them for colors that day not knowing that light colors tend to be roos & i loved the mix of shades so I wanted one of each shade.

Ours were sold here back in 1971. Thats when those pictures were from. And as catscan said, it was done here at easter time as a noveltie. And most people only bought 1 or 2, so that was a way for the company that had them to make a profit off the baby roosters.
Ours were sold here at a Dime store.
We have never had a chance to pick our own out. We have had to order from the feed mill here in advance.
I'm going to have to check the feed mill near where I live to see what they might sell.

I know Este's Hatchery here sells them.. but its straight run. ours show up about a week or two before Easter I think. They were sold out of chicks this year tho & couldn't sell the dyed chicks. Mom will kill me but i intend on getting some. They were so cute & only $1 each. I think they were like Leghorns... all white chickens when they grew up & really long legs. Some of our worst layers.. but they sure did taste good.

Thats interesting greykyttyn. Hmmmmmmm
Yes, mine were all leghorns roosters.
We have pretty cold weather here alot of the time at easter time. We can still have snow at that time depending on when easter lands. (all though one year I even saw snow in May), so that is probably part of the reason they are no longer sold here. (people didn't know how to care for a baby chick).
My BF ended up getting 4 leghorns hens because of our screwed up order, but they were some of our best layers.
The trouble with them was,
1. Keeping them in the run (They flew great, and were always out.)
2. Keeping them in the coop (they liked to roost in the tree better, in the dead of winter even).
3. Keeping them out of my flower beds ( I think they thought they were helping).

lol snow.. on Easter...? I spent 75% of my childhood Easters hunting Easter eggs in a snow suit. Its either snowy.. rainy.. or so hot u can't breathe and everyone prays it doesn't rain.. bc if it rains on Easter Sunday here.. it will without a doubt rain for the next 7 Sundays. Normally we still have chances of snow & possible 20 to 40 degree temps at night for a couple weeks at least after Sunday. Then we have Blackberry winter.. which is 10 days of 30 degree temps during the day so the blackberry's produce well. That one always sucks bc people tend to put their winter clothes up before it hits. It was hard on the chickens too. I never knew when i could put the babies out & when i couldn't. I had 33 lil ones that i didn't want to freeze. Next year won't be so bad. I have the coop set up for brooder lamps now. I can just keep the babies in one section of that till a consistent week of warm temps. most people here don't know how to care for them either.. but normally its only farm kids that is buying them anymore.. bc they are only sold in the farm stores & the general public isn't going to set one toenail into those stores.
