Glad I had researched this out the other day and knew to put frozen gallons of water in there with them. I had them in the freezer.
Today is a scorcher here in Texas.
Thanks for the good advice.
106 F here, chickens are panting
I use frozen water bottles for my rabbits here when it gets that warm. They do really help. Also those stand up misters they sell at Lowe's.
Which reminds me I better put some more water in the freezer. Sometimes when it starts crazy record highs like this, it continues for awhile.
Hi,
I only have four girls, but they too were panting. (I am sure it was hotter in Lodi) I went out and watered down the dirt in their pen. I watered the shady areas and made it really wet so it soaked in. I found them scratching down a few inches and sitting in the dirt. I think that helped.
Although, I found that they don't like to be watered down like my bird does!
Light, where in Texas are you? Down here (south of Houston) it's been record hot for a couple of weeks. No change predicted.
Same here......north of Houston......it has been hot hot, hot. No relief in sight.
Imagesoart yes it sure helps if you go out and mist the coop occasionally or use a sprinkler to wet the top of the coop.
Thats how i keep mine cool on those suffocating days to me the air seems real heavy
We were haveing some scorching days but ours has cooled some now
I saw the coolest fan at lowes it was a misting fan as the fan oscillated back and forth there was mist coming out of it.
The price scared me away tho $99 to rich for me ;~)
ooo that sounds like the kind of fan we need for these hot days, but the price is too rich for me too.
Smedge I'm going to keep my eye on them and they could mark them down if they don't sell well.
I buy perennials at lowes 50 to 75% off when the blooms fall off and they get a little scraggly all they need is a little TLC.
It is amazing what you can get if you keep your eyes open. My husband gets what they call scrap lumber for 75% off or more. He got what would have been $500 worth of stuff for about $16 one time. Some of the lumber may be a little warped, some may have a crack here or there, some looks like nothing is wrong with it. We even got open box shingles in the last batch. He uses the stuff it to build the chicken houses, nesting boxes etc. I'll have to upload a pic of the hen house he is working on.
They can really mark it down when they want to get rid of it i bought 4~ 50 foot rolls of fencing wire the real expensive kind for $20 a roll
Wow, my husband would love to see a deal like that. He has been pricing fencing and keeps putting off getting any.
It was 108 degrees F here yesterday. I live close to Amarillo, Texas. We don't have the humidity you have in Georgia or other states. I'm grateful for that at least.
June temps were very moderate, but a few days ago, all that changed. Another scorcher is forecast for today. This will be the third day straight.
The only positive thing I can think about this, is, the heat sterilizing everything outside. I suppose that could be a good thing.
I left water out for the wild rabbits at the horse lot last night. I saw one as I drove up, and he looked so weak. I felt sorry for him.
This kind of heat is brutal to plants and animals, and people too, that are out in it.
Well at least you are only up to 3 days straight for a scorcher, we are up to more than a month of scorcher days.
:) I am sooo glad i'm not in TX. Our heat finally broke today. It was 104 yesterday here & today is barely 80 degrees after all the nasty storms last night. The chickens are loving it. Mud puddles everywhere to play in.
OOOH! Send it our way.
I'll do my best. Not sure you want the storms we had tho. half dollar size hail & 70 mph winds. It was kinda icky there for awhile this morning early.
Hail melts into water; I'll take it!
