Well I have a squirl proof feeder that is pretty rusted. Is it safe to put bird food in?

yea, bees made there home in it last summer
I wouldn't use it then unless you can get the rust removed and the feeder cleaned and sanitized. I don't know the effect on birds but it's better to be safe than sorry (so to speak).
