Purple hyacinth beans not blooming, why?

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Not sure this woud be the right forum, but thought I'd try here first.

I have two different varieties of purple hyacinth bean vines that I received at a swap. I knew they were different varieties because the bean pods looked slightly different. Well, now I really know they are different because one is blooming and the other isn't. They are in the same bed with the same light conditions, same soil, watered the same, but one is blooming (the vines are not nearly as big or full) and the other is full and lush without a single bloom. The blooming one has been blooming since mid spring.

Any ideas why it isn't blooming? Any hope for it? It looks very healthy.

enouph water and sun??

Good question, but they are getting plenty of both and exactly the same amount as the other variety that is planted 3 feet away.

Still not blooming? Odd, I've never had issue with them. Being a legume, I wonder if they're getting too much Nitrogen? But they're in the same bed with some that are blooming, so that's probably not it.

I wondered about the nitrogen issue, too, since they are very lush and green. But your right, same bed and same dirt as bloomers. I did laugh at myself the other day because I told myself I would not be planting that variety again and realized duh, without blooms and pods, I wouldn't have any seeds to plant anyway! It may continue to be a mystery. I can live with that.

interested in hearing the answer to yer question, ngard. Have almost the same issue, except mine are 10 feet away from each other, with one patch in great shape and the other looks sickly.

I guess it is somewhat reassuring to know I am not the only one with the problem! Jax, are yours different varieties?

Do you still have no blooms on one?
Do not know if this will work but maybe trim it back about a third, may shock it into getting to business before it is too late.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, what do you know! It's first blooms opened today! Maybe it will continue blooming into November of December in this warm climate. The other vines are just covered with blooms right now. If this one catches up, it will be gorgeous.

Please send me some beans if you get any. I have had only 4 puny blooms from mine!

Birdie, I will send you some from my other plants that bloomed from mid spring and are still blooming. I have some purple and some white blooms. Already have seeds from the white. Would you like some of both?

Another pic. Don't know why it turned sideways. It wasn't that way in Picassa. The small bush in front of the vines is pavonia rock rose.

Yes, thank you i would like some of each. I did not even know they also came in white. the Rockrose is very prettya also

While I have planted the same purple variety, situation remains the same! the sickly bush has done nothing. If I may, can I please have a few white seeds for planting? I really want to try this again. thank you.

Tonya, I hope you'll be saving plenty of seeds from both colors for the Piggy Swap! I had no volunteer HBs this year, and the seed I have left is at least 8 years old, so I'm gonna want some fresh seed. I've never grown the white ones, would like to try some of those in my Sky Garden next year :-)

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Jax and Neal, I have plenty of seeds and will surely have some for the swap. Jax, will you be in the piggy swap? I can set some aside for you for that. Birdie Blue, will you be in the swap? If the two of you are not planning on being in the swap, not a problem. I'll send some to you, although it may be a bit before I can get to it. The purple pods are just now maturing and I am also snowed under at work, putting in a lot of overtime.

Thanks for your patience!

Thanks Tonya! I will not be in any seed swap as I have nothing to share. Even my delicate but vibrant little Cypress vine is barely making a show this year. I guess I will not get any seed from that for next year either.
You are so kind in remembering us. Just whenever you can send seed will be fine and I will return your postage.
