Is anyone else drowning?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

My trusty rain gauge gave up hours ago. I know we had 1 1/2" in 45 minutes earlier this afternoon and it has been too wet to check ever since. The poor dog needs to go out but we are not talking about a gentle rain here it is a rumbly, thundery downpour that won't stop.

My water bill has been about $100 less per month this year than it was last summer so some good comes from all this moisture.

Send some of that rain our way. It is so dishearting watching the weatherman promise a chance of rain, hearing rumbling, and yet get nothing. From what we see you guys are in for it for the rest of the night and the next 2 days!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

When I got up this morning it was 67 degrees and the rain gauge said 2.25 inches!

Not only is everything soggy and it looks like it is about to start raining again, but the deer did me in again last night. They even ate the weedy sunflowers underneath the bird feeders although they prefer my tropical hibiscus and the roses. Their hoofprints are everywhere.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Have you tried the radio thing?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

No, it sounded like a good idea until I realized I would need about a dozen radios. These critters come at me from all directions.

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

The funny thing is I live not that far from Ardesia and I missed the heavy rain yesterday, today I'm getting a nice steady rain. Hope it keeps up all day.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

LOL, my irrigation system repair guy just left. Sure don't need the system right now but I did have some heads that needed to be replaced. He lives less than a mile as the crow flies and he got less than an inch of rain. He checked my rain gauge and told me I got 3 1/2 inches last night.

It is raining again right now.

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

It poured yesterday. We got several inches. And it's raining again...

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Absolute downpour here last night. Rain gauge has 5 1/4" since Saturday, and more than 3" of that was last night.

You have my sympathies Deb. The mosquitoes are loving this weather.

A few weeks ago when we had those torrential rains there was a lot of flooding. The tides were unusually high that week and the storm water had no where to go. I have just learned that a large number of trees and shrubs in the low lying areas are dying as a result. I can only imagine that the rains we had the other night will compound the problem. So far I have had only seen one casualty here. A newly planted black ginger seems to have melted from all the water.

It's a weird year! Torrential downpours in some areas, no rain in areas 2-3 miles away! Makes for strange growing results this year!

As an aside, I'd offer this on the "weather radio" thing...we consider it a "curse on both our houses"! The thing goes off whenever it feels so prompted, to the point where pets dive for cover whenever it comes on, but all to naught. We've moved the 'weather radio' to the darkest, dankest, part of the house in hopes it willl rot away...and it will.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

LOL! Must be like "Weatherbug". Darn thing starts chirping for heat advisories to hurricanes and everything in between - including amber alerts. I'd really rather just know about severe weather - a tornado or a hurricane. Wish the darn cricket would keep quiet about the rest.

Probably the same system. I understand your impulse to bury it in a dark place. ;->

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

That's why I didn't buy one .. I looked at the instructions to see if you could program it to receive only alerts you wanted and it doesn't.

I have one at work; I'm so popular when it starts shrieking. It particularly likes to wait until an important meeting is going on.

Boy, oh boy, it poured today! Not a peep from the weather radio.

We got walloped again out here. Jenny, I just learned that your favorite pick your own farm is closing this week. The veggies are too wet.

Johns Island, SC

My veggies are a total failure this year, ardesia. First time ever, anywhere. But it's not just me in this area...none of my veggie-gardening friends fared any better. It might be the unusually high rainfall this year, but I don't think so. My veggie garden is a 40'x60' raised bed filled with amended soil (over 20 years of constant replenishment) and really good drainage (to the point where I had to run drip irrigation for 15 minutes every day in normal years to keep everyone happy). I'm thinking it may be more the timing of that really hot week we had in June this year, right at a critical point for fruit/flower development. Haven't been able to corner it yet, but I will!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

You are certainly onto somehing; nothing will fruit when the night time temps are as high as they were that week.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

We got 1.5" of rain yesterday late afternoon.
Seems to all come at once!

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

I think we had a microburst deb .. I was on my way to see a client on West Carolina near Central when the rain started going sideways and tree limbs, pine cones and leaves started falling! When I got home, a number of plants in pots that weren't staked into the ground were on their side and my arch trellis and bush morning glory were leaning to the right as well!

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

I believe that is called a "cell" not microburst.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Hmm .. well the way the weather guy on tv described a microbust it seemed like the description .. what's the difference?
