What do you do when......

A av leaf doesn't give you ears? Did I say that right? I have a av leaf that has been stuck since Feb. It is Sora Odle Ireland. It has rooted, looks good, no rot, but just won't give me any babies. Any suggestions?

Oh my goodness, I don't know. Maybe someone will chime in.

Actually, I have 2! First, and most tried and true, cut off the top of the leaf. This will cause the leaf to direct it's energy into growing mouse ears instead growing the leaf. Second, is drop therapy. Take the pot, give it a few sharp taps on the table (or you can do some short, controlled drops). As I am an experienced expert on dropping plants(unintentionally), I can tell you they get scared and start to procreate b/c they think you are going to kill them! Kill or cure...you be the judge! LOL!

(don't worry, it really works-lol)

How long is the stem? I recently heard of an av leaf that sat, rooted and in a cup for many months...the stem was 3 or more inches long, it eventually got plants. I was told the shorter stem is better. Some varieties just take longer than others. Yours is varigated, could be why. When you use a varigated leaf, you want one with the most green, does your leaf have a lot of white. I don't know how to get it to produce plantlets other than patience, ha. To get an av to bloom, some people "shock" them by thumping the pot hard or putting it in the fridge for a few minutes...don't know if that would work with a leaf to produce plantlets or not. Do you have a chance to put down another leaf. Maybe someone else will know something. Good luck with it. tish

One word on the pot thumping....do that OUTSIDE! it can get messy! ha.

I had forgotten about cutting the leaf....that leaf will continue to grow just like it would have on the av plant..you want that energy to go into rooting.

Besides 'beheading and dropping' LOL....you can also gently squeeze the rootball.

OK.....Leaf has been cut.....it has been dropped....rootball has been squeezed!! LOL!! So we shall see what happens.

Thanks all!!

It's more than likely gonna grow legs then run!! LOL!!

rotflolol!

well, if you all are correct, then with all the clumsy dropping and knocking going on around here, they should all be blooming and reproducing soon.

Thanks for the tips, I am off to go slap my plants around, show'em who's boss....
