Growing Passion Fruit indoors in Wisconsin

Litchfield Park , AZ(Zone 9b)

My son fell in love with Passion Fruit on a trip to Costa Rica so he is trying to grow in indoors.
He has purchased Passiflora Edulis 'McCain' from Logee and keeps in under grow lights for
about 15-18 hours a day. So far no flowers. The plant is about one year old and growing vigorously.
Does anyone know if he is wasting his time trying to get this plant to flower and thus fruit indoors.
Thanks,
Dee

Hi Dee,

I think it might do better if the lighting was varied over the seasons like natural light. I'm not sure about edulis, but I know some plants flower as the day length gets longer or shorter. I believe there are programable timers out there that the lights can be plugged into. He might also just consider putting it outside for the summer, unless your night temps are below 55 or so. The most important thing is probably just to avoid killing it from cold.

Good luck!

Is there any way you can move her outside for the summer months?? I keep mine inddors for the winter, now she is outside and producing flowers and fruit! I am also fertilizing her WEEKLY!

I've read where many are "length of vine" dependent to flower. They need height. I don't know this plant well enough though. Use fertilizer high in the middle number.
Whether it blooms or not, he's learned a lot. Teach him to keep a detailed journal, he might make a scientist yet.

Update on growing passion fruit McCain indoors, it works just takes awhile.
After two years my son's plant finally started producing fruit. He lives in an
apartment and just has the plant under a grow light.
