Second Generation Potting Soil

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9b)

Hello Folks - I have several large containers used [in an attempt] to grow one tomato plant each this spring. Due to weird temperature fluctuations [not to mention my limited ability as a tomato farmer], they never really produced anything.

So - - - now I have all these large containers of used potting soil that had been amended with guano and worm castings as well as some perlite for air and drainage. A bit of an investment to just toss under the rose bushes now.

Do you folks re-use potting soil?

Oh DEFINITELY refresh and reuse! And come join us over in the Self-Contained Veggie Gardens forum! Since you're Zone 9a, are you planning a fall. Garden? I have 22 tomato cuttings that I've rooted from last seasons vines. Took them at 6-8" and they're 26" now in 5-gallon growbags in the shade. Trying 2 keep em comfortable til August 1st. Then I'll up the fertilizer and calcium and let em take off into the cool of fall. Also still have okra seedlings 2 out out. Playing "beat the clock" on when it'll actually get cold here! I'm feeling like we're gonna have a LOT more summer heat left! LMK Linda

I'm taking a break from veggie gardening for a while. Let the gardens rest while I work on landscaping issues. You may find me in the landscaping design forum instead of veggie gardening. Only so much time in a day.

MaryMcP - I reuse my potting soil as long as the year-before's tenant did not have any diseases. I dump it into my garden cart, add some fresh potting soil and amendments, then fill my pots about 3/4 (or so) - then I add my transplants and add mulch almost to the rim.

At the end of the season, I remove the mulch either to the garbage or the compost pile.
