We have a woody wet yard and sitting on the porch in the evening is torture - until this year. I am convinced that we have a lot fewer mosquitoes because we got seven hens this spring, and they are free range in the back yard.
Any opinions?
Free range hens equal fewer mosquitoes?
Yes they eat mosquitoes as well as gnats and other flying pest i have even seen mine catch flies {{{Gross}}}
Agrees with harmony :)..........our chickens love them.
And if you have a slug problem they will take care of them too.
OMG Kassy i didn't know they eat slugs thats even more {{{Gross}}}
Yes, chickens are the exterminators of the garden. They love bugs and slugs and worms but be aware they like a little salad with their meat and you will lose fresh greens along with the weeds and insects.
A chicken will eat almost anything that doesn’t eat it first.
I love to wach ours when the flying ants are out......they run all over the yard after them :)
I had them fenced inside the garden until I was ready to plant, now they're fenced outside. It seems to be working well!
Makes me so happy when my hens eat those big fat slugs! They just slime in and leave a horrible slime trail every where they go.. very unwelcome.. I have brugs..
I love to watch the hens and even the young pullets get in "take off mode" and stretch out and run full blast after the lil pesty flies..
Come to think of it.. the mosquitoes aren't a problem this year!
Great idea Analemma
Ours love the grub worms from the June Beetle. When I'm weeding my flower beds and dig any of them up, I take them over to the girls. They play grub worm tag then, chasing each other around the run and taking them away from each other.
Letting them in the garden before you plant I'm sure has a lot of advantages.
We also have a fence around the garden, or we wouldn't have a garden left when they are let out to roam.
Kassy i know those beetle grubs they live in my Rabbit manure my ducks dig those out and eat them {:~)
I can't let the girls out when I am weeding my flower beds, especially in the spring. They come running to try to help me, so they think.
The leghorns were really bad when it came to my flower beds. I had to keep them penned in, the flower beds that is..........The leghorns always flew out of the run :(
This is what the girls did to one of my flowers this year :(
Darn and that was really going to be pretty ;)
I know :(
And I know it was them that did it, because they picked the buds off and left them lay. And there had been a small fence around it that went up to where the first buds were picked off :(
Sassy girls!
