Question about brooding hen

Bridgewater, ME

I have a silkie that for the last two days has been in her nest and won`t come out only to drink and eat, this sounds like broodieness but there are no eggs, whats going on?I have never had a broodie before. My dh tried to move her last night to see if there were any eggs under here and she kept pecking at him and would not move, but she was outside a few minutes ago and I ran out and looked in the nest and no eggs, but she is back in there again sitting on nothing.,

That is why people will tell you Silkies will hatch air. LOL Sorry Green but it is true, Mine does the same thing. I just keep throwing her off the nest and she screams at me. We no longer have a loving relationship. Even though I still feed, water, and house her. She is a spoiled snot. Good luck Hay

Make sure your address is in the address exchange.. LOL (just kidding) I think someone needs to send you guyz some fertile eggs..

Really, I'm just lookin out for the poor dedicated moms here.. ;)

All she wants is a few eggs Haystack.. is that too much for a girl to ask????

Yep, Silkies will sit on and hatch anything. Our 6 Silkies have been the broodiest things this year.
Cochins are pretty good sitters too, here is a story for you.....
We have a Blue Cochin that layed an egg and was sitting on it. Her and another blue were first "sharing" the egg. One would get up for a while, the other would sit on the egg and then the first would get back on the egg. This went on for a couple of days till the second one I guess decided she wanted to sit all the time and not just be a part time sitter or the first hen decided that she no longer wanted to share her egg. Anyway, the second hen was sitting on nothing right by the first hen. So we had sympathy on her and gave her an egg.

Smedge What a great story and so true my oegb's are the same way with going broody.
I always use them i have one on some wooden eggs right now been on them about 2 weeks i'm going to be setting her on some eggs tomorrow.

Going tomorow and get two fertlized silkie eggs, hope this helps here lol

(Zone 7b)

Awwwww She will love you for getting her some eggs

Beware Silkies love to sit on eggs and are excellent mothers. She may hatch those out and then go broody again a month or so after. We have 6 Silkies and all hatched eggs this year. At least 4 of them sat on and hatched eggs more than once. Right now we have one on eggs due to hatch Sunday.

I hope my Silkies i have are that broody i want to use them to hatch Call Ducks

Green!!! Are you going to give in to that spoild brat? What will happen when my Silkie hears about it!!! A chicken run revolt. Ahhh Green... and I thought I could count on you??

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh Haystack.. don't be such a tight wad... give her some jap bantam eggs! OR you could put some eggs bred by your dinosaur roo.. LOL

Bridgewater, ME

Yes Hay I am going to give into her because this will be my first experience of having a hen to sit on eggs and seeing baby chicks born to a hen instead of ordering through the mail,I am excited about this and hope it all works out well.I promise I won`t give in again(maybe not promise! will do the best I can)remember you guys have been in the chicken raising a long time and I`m only in for 13 months and I want to see a mother with her chicks, only getting two eggs because the guy I`m getting them from said he put four under his silkie and all four hatched, two will be enough for me.

OK, back to brooding hens.
We had a little bantam that was our brooder. Well, more so then any of the other hens were. We used her to raise a batch and it was rather funny when they were getting as big as her and they were still babies.
When she got broody again, and my BF didn't want any chicks at that time, he left her have one egg. He marked that egg with a permanent marker, because of course she was so kind to get off the nest to let the other girls lay their eggs, and then get back on it to keep them warm. Every day he would come home from work and take her off the nest and collect all the eggs but the one that was marked. He didn't think that egg was going to hatch and would have given her another one if she wanted to keep sitting when needed.
One day when he was at work, and I was there, I went out to check for eggs. I put my hand under her and felt fuzz :o
I had to quick get her a box and nesting material and put it into the pen that we used for them when they were brooding and transfer her and the chick over to it.
