When I got my first (and only) gnome I looked through a list of German names, since my gnome was made in Germany. The name I chose is Oliver because it references the olive tree, which is a symbol of friendship and peace. There are many lists online. Another idea is to choose a word that has meaning to you and then find out what it is in another language.
Your gnomes sure are cute!

Happy Anniversary Tilly!

Not very good with naming pets or anything else. In my eyes, I see the dwarfs. Doc for the reader and maybe Happy

Original? Creative? Don't know how...lol

Tills, is there a character from a book you particularly like?

My nicotiana started from your seeds is as tall as I am and flowering so pretty!

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

The first one looks like "Gerome" and the second looks like "Farley" to me. :)

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I do have a very favorite book collection, I had the original version many years ago but it was destroyed, my DH got me another set but it was rewrote by the author's son and not the same as the original. But I know its not German and there is someone that has goats by those names LOL

Making a list, Like those Pony.

Thanks Pea

LOL about the books - what was the collection? The name does not have to be German! It just has to be special to you. I personally like to think of gnomes as protectors of our gardens.
Here are a few;
Esmond - Middle English, meaning 'Gracious Protector'
Faramundo - Italian, meaning 'Journey Protection'
Olek - Greek, meaning 'Defender of Mankind'
Ragimund - German, meaning 'Wise Protector'
Saskia - Dutch, meaning 'Defender of Mankind'
Skylar - English, meaning 'Protection, Shelter'
Zsigmond - Hungarian, meaning 'Victory Protection'

Have a wonderful 4th!

When I was a kid we named our cats after storybook characters, How about Pete for the one who likes listening to stories. I learned how to tell stories from a record of Pete Seeger.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Forgot to add: HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Thank You

Happy 4TH

Judi, It was The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

tills, YOU HAD FIRST EDITION LORD OF THE RINGS????? shoot. so sorry you lost them.

But, question: what makes you think the second little chappie can't read?

I really like the idea that you choose a word or place you like, or that means something to you - and then translate into another language. Portland speaks French and Italian, and one of the scandanavian (did I spell that right) - or at least went to Architectural school there - so she can translate.

Or how about shortening one of the names from the hobbits: Hobby? Gandy?

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

Tilly,
If I remember correctly you have a gypsy wagon conversion LOL! ..or will some day. Since these gnomes were a gift from your husband for your Anniversary I have chosen these names from a list if gypsy names.

Besnik = Faithful
Rye = gentleman

Hopefully your husband is a faithful gentleman and treats you like a princess! Happy anniversary!

3rd option ... I did like Danior = born with teeth..LOL!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Wo Bea, you hit the nail on the head. Yes he is both, I like those names except how do you pronounce the first one ???? I f you say it wrong, it could sound weird Like beef steak LOL

Yes Laurie they where my pride and joy. I lost a great many books when my house burned down. I also had some of Louie Lamor's first books. But I can't complain, the books save all my photo albums.

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I have no experience in the gypsy language but I would pronounce it like " bez nick". Now it sounds like a russian space craft.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Now that sounds good Mmmm

And I forgot to say Laurie you are right, can he read, but then he looks so smart.

Going back to the main characters in the Hobbit, It was Bilbo who wanted to be left alone in Quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf had a quest. I thank I have a clue as what to call them.
Thank you Judi for bringing up past books, I loved those books and have read them at lest 3 times. When I read the reprint from the Son, it was not the same. I know the movie was a big hit, but was not to me. I did not like the movie. Hobbits are little people not grown men, Sorry LOL

(Judi)Portland, OR

Oh Laurie I wish I spoke French and Italian but I don't. Actually I can do ok in Italian when I'm there for a couple of weeks but French? No way. I didn't go to school in Scandinavia, just did some research there. So I really only speak English unless hiding in Cortona.

Tills that is so sad you lost those books! I like Laurie's suggestion of Hobby and Gandy. Every time you looked at them you would think about your favorite books and how they enriched your life. What we do and think and read becomes a part of our thought process. I think when you let another person into your head (like a lover/husband) it is an enormous privilege, and should not be taken lightly.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Bilbo and Gandalf are wonderful names as well. I have not read those books but maybe I shall.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

If you do want to read the books ( there are 4), please fine the real version. the one my DH bought for me to replace the ones I lost, are not the same. The son rewrote most of the books. I was very sad when I read the first book. Just not the same. I had the 1937 copys.
Don't watch the movie version, its wrong. Little people (Hobbits) don't ride Horses and they are only 4' tall. I hated the movie, its was not right. The cartoon version was more right on.

(Judi)Portland, OR

So what is the real author's name? You had the books from 1937? I had no idea it was written so log ago. now I am intrigued!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

J. R. Tolkien, the father

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

All the above are wonderful names. You are all so creative. I could only come up with Smokey for the first one. LOL

Maybe you can come up with some good chicken names for me! All hens (females).

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Ohhhh, Gwen, please call one of thm Edith!!

There's a story: we took a sabbatical in Stanford one year, and woman-in-opposite-house ran across street to greet us (literally) 'because you're sooooooo English' (okay) and introduced herself as "Edith, spelled E-d-w-y-t-h - its the English spelling' she told us, 'my mother loves everything ENGLLLIIIISSSHHH' She informed us, 'its pronounced Ed-wyth in England' (which she pronounced EDwhite) - ever after, she was known to us as 'eggwhite', which we thought would be a mighty fine name for our first chicken which has yet to be acquired (and may never be) - and thus, I have always wanted to name a chicken Edith. (And no, Edith is not spelled Edwyth in England, nor pronounced eggwhite). I really do love non-sequential thinking.

End of story.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

ROFL. I can so relate to that poor woman because I too love all things English. Okay, the very next chicken I buy will be Edith, which I actually think is a good chicken name even without the story! I think all the old fashioned sorts of ladies' names are good chicken names.

So how did you like Stanford? I used to live quite close, before we moved to Whidbey Island.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

It was such a long time ago - really another lifetime, and we were there before all the dot.com/silicon millionaires bought up the town - it had such a nice laziness about it - lots of small small shops which seem to exist on selling just one specialist thing, and a bank that gave all of its customers sacks of Walla Walla Washington onions in the summer. How cool is that. An excellent public library, some terrific exhibitions, and we got to hear some wonderful speakers. All in all, very nice.

I went back several years ago to visit friends, and it had changed. Probably me more than Stanford.

It smells of hot dirt and eucalyptus (spelling?) in the summer. Yumm.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Not, it wasn't you. It has changed tremendously. Hence our exit to the PNW.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Is that good news or bad news that it Stanford that has changed and not me - here I thought I was developing, gaining more sophistication.......alas.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Obviously you have changed enough to recognize excess when you see it.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

hmmmm, excess - yessssss, in others possibly, in self - NEVER!

(Judi)Portland, OR

I took another look at your gnome pictures, and the one with the book looks like "Professor" to me. Or professor in another language, like Professore (Italian). They are both so cute!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Tills - how is the naming going?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Have been to busy To work on it LOL between work, the new car deal and I could go on and on and on ...And don't forget the yard work on top of it ^_^

I was thinking on painting them blue, and turning them into Smurfs LOL. I like them.
I have not had much time to play with anything these days, Im getting to old to run with the young ones but I still keep up. But then again I am faster than they are, Ha Ha
I'm thinking Gandi (the wizard) and Frodo ( the Ring bearer) Was just a thought

My two favorite characters from the book Tills. When you're ready you'll know what to call them.

(Judi)Portland, OR

I like Gandi and Frodo! Great choices Tills. Do you ever have time to just sit still and take a deep breath?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

No, Whats that LOL

Yes I like the names so far
