I got chickens!
They are so cute. What an interesting story.
Your adventure is off to a good start. They are really cute.
Sounds like you are into a wonderful adventure.
Several years ago we ordered 100 "pit run" chickens from one of the poultry suppliers. It was great fun watching them grow and learning what varieties we had! Would enjoy doing it again, but don't have that much energy anymore nor is DDH around to do the nasty parts of the chicken dinner preparations. Rarejem was little then and she and her brother got to pick out the Sunday dinner candidate. (Don't grimace, now. What else do you do with 100 chickens?) They always found a mean one that had attacked them when they were collecting eggs. She still entertains thoughts of trying chickens, but we are in the woods so keeping them safe is a big issue. So is keeping them out of the flower beds!
Do enjoy your new babies!
Hilarious that you let your kids pick out the dinner! I love this.
Gwendalou,
I loved your story, and your kids are adorable! You will have a great time with them! Keep us updated! It will be fun to watch them mature.
As Mom mentioned above, raising the chickens when my brother and I were little was a very memorable experience. I love all creatures great and small, but as a little kid collecting eggs and getting chased by a rooster that seemed almost as big as you were made the Sunday dinner addition pretty easy to determine. Had some best friends in the chicken coop too. Gray Lady was an araconda that I just adored. Pretty green eggs, and the sweetest chicken alive. I would gather bunches of green grass and make a little nest out of it that both of us could sit in. And my DH may be in the same position as yours soon....I have been tempted for the last several years to at least try a few again.....
DH is completely enchanted now. Last night I mentioned we should reconsider where we put the coop, that they were so much fun to watch, we should put it closer to the house so we could sit on the deck and watch them. He agreed! LOL (What I neglected to mention was that by doing that, we then have that small 'pasture' open and available for other barnyard animals. I've been wanting a couple miniature donkeys and also a pig.....)
tee hee
I dreamed last night that we had chickens. Now I want some baby chicks. That explains why everyday I think I "need" more plants. I read DG before I go to bed, drool over everyone's beautiful pictures, and the next day I find myself wandering around a nursery. Talk about the effects of advertising. You are the best!!!
I want chickens, but the reality is, they would be goners real soon. And that would be a sad thing. We have 3 big owls in the backyard trees, and they would probably love fresh chickens.
You'd have to net their run. Or you could just get 2 or 3 and keep them in a chicken tractor.
We used to have an owl but I haven't heard or seen him in a couple years. Hoping the chickens don't bring owls here from elsewhere...
I bet you don't have a vole problem with those owls taking care of the hunting.
I don't know if we have voles or not, but we sure do have active moles. Our yard is a mess and they won't stay out of the flower beds either. We have so many tunnels out there, we are probably known as Grand Central Station in the mole world.
