showy white / purple/ yellow heirloom bearded iris for trade

South Lyon, MI(Zone 5a)

I've got a bunch of Tall Bearded Iris, Helen Collingwood (Hybridized by Smith; Year of Registration or Introduction: 1949) to spare this year and thought I'd offer them up for trade.

These are stately plants with tall sword like leaves and even taller blooms. They are pure toned and brightly colored plants with wow factor from both their stature and intense coloring - white white coupled with intense purple and a yellow 'throat'.

They are also very hardy. I have been a bad plant-mom for 15 years and these guys keep on blooming year after year, in spite of my abuse! I'm in Michigan, zone 5a at times, and they don't have a problem with that.

If anyone wants to trade me, I'm currently looking to build up my hosta collection. In addition to the hostas, I tend to like the weirder plants so if you've got something peculiar... that sounds like it might be right up my alley LOL.

Anyway, if anyone is interested I'm looking forward to some exchanges.

Peace,
Audre

I have many daylily to trade if you would like to do a swap. Look on my trade list and see if there is anything you would like. I will be dividing Siloam BoPeep, Little Missy, Fuschia Dreams, Lavender Illusion, Shady Lady, Strawberry Candy, or Christmas Wishes very soon if you would like any of them.

Just a question, is the picture you have of the iris called "Punch Classic" Its very beautiful!

South Lyon, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey Everyone,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The weekend 'holiday' ended a bit later than I expected it to so I'm just now getting back to normal.

blueskyfd11 - the Iris being "Punch Classic" -- It is quite possible that these Iris are also called something else. From my research I've found the most information and photos point to Helen Collingwood (Hybridized by Smith; Year of Registration or Introduction: 1949). I can also tell you that these particular plants are from stock that is about 60 years old. These are from my grandfather's garden planted shortly after the war. The year of registration for Helen Collingwood seems to be about right - where he would be looking for new and exciting specimens that 'just came out' for his spectacular garden. I've had them growing in my garden since 1989, when I raided his beds to make sure at least a few of our childhood memories stayed alive and blooming. The description of the German classic iris "Punch" does sound similar but to my eye, the Punch Classic are 'frillier' and a tad less vibrantly colored or more pastel where the ones I've got are intensely colored. Here is a photo I found online of the Punch Classic:

I've got several hundred Iris in the bed so we should be able to accommodate everyone :-) Okay I'll just go down the list....

1violetheart - I've been meaning to get a few Cinnamon Ferns, maybe you might consider them as a trade instead of the other Lilys or Iris (btw, WOW what a list you've got!!! That dark 'African' lily is very cool). If not, then maybe the Common Ninebark, Eastern Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius)?

ifound4u - Howabout the Japanese Spurge, Pachysandra 'Green Carpet' (Pachysandra terminalis)? Looks like a lovely plant, and you know you can never have too much ground cover LOL.

juttz - Golden Tiara hosta sounds like a good trade. No such thing as 'too many hostas' (I'm near Ann Arbor, Michigan)

Eglantyne - Sure, hosta is good - If you can snap a quick photo of it we might be able to help you identify it. Regardless, we can trade for hostas, nottaproblemo.

Thanks everyone.

Peace,
Audre

Sounds good to me! I can have it ready to be mailed on Monday.
I don't like to mail anything after Wednesday at the latest that way it is not sitting in some warehouse
boiling to death from the heat.

D-mail me with your address.

I do not have anything that is weird that I can think of...wait...does Dragon Fruit work? If not, I'm ordering a couple different kinds of plants and maybe later this summer have a trade. If you have alot of that beautiful iris, would you maybe just hold a rhizom for me? Or if its to late, next year I will have alot more things to trade. Thanks :)

Does your iris have pbf (purple based foliage)?

South Lyon, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey Blue - No worries, we have lots of the Iris so when you are ready we'll have them. Actually I've decided to try sedums again for a sandy sunny spot I'm working on as my next new garden spot so if you have any of those that are hardy to zone 5 that might work. Also grasses and ferns are always nice to tuck away somewhere. If it sounds like I'm easy... pretty much LOL.

Mittsy - Off the top of my head I'd say no, no purple in the foliage. I will need to run out there tomorrow in daylight to confirm or dig up a photo from previous years.

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank you. I have three different purple/white combination iris. I'd like to swap 1 rhizome to plant next to mine to see if I could id mine as Helen Collingwood. Would you be willing? I'd send mine in a bubble envelope, you could return same envelope to me.

Hey Mittsy,

Not a problem.

Howabout we swap 3 -- on the chance that you have different Iris than me?

Shipping for 1 vs for 3 little plantlets should not be significantly different. Also, having more than one specimen will make the comparison more sure since you'd have a wider base of test plants to compare against. (to counter any particular irregularities of a single plant)

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I only have three left after giving them away to friends and relatives, I can send you two but they are not plantlets, they are robust rhizomes. I asked if they had purple based foliage. Mine do not.

South Lyon, MI(Zone 5a)

No worries Mittsy, I'll just send you one so you can compare, no need to send me anything. As for the purple based foliage, since I have never seen an Iris which does, I can't be certain but to my eye, they have no purple anywhere in the foliage. If your address is listed I'll take it off the list, otherwise, send me a Dmail with shipping info.

How about we do the cin fern and nine bark. The nine bark will be very well rooted 2-3 yr old divisions (as many as you need) and the cin fern will be a root ball about the size of an orange or larger. Anyway, d-mail with specifics such as address and shipping dates. I would love enough to share with my mom and best friend. So, let me know how many nine barks you want along with the cin fern.
Thanks,
Char

Hey Audre, your iris came today, wow! was that fast and they are in beautiful condition! As soon as the ferns sprout and get some size to them, I will box up those and the other items and get them right to you. Thank you so much! I cant wait for next year...i want to see these so badly!

Sandy (blue)

South Lyon, MI(Zone 5a)

Hey Sandy that's awesome.

Glad the little buggers got to you safe and sound. And I can't wait to see how your fern sprouting goes. Definitely keep us posted on how easy/difficult it was to work with the spores.

Peace,
Audre
