Frogs like containers, too!

Camdenton, MO(Zone 6a)

This little guy was in my spearmint pot today. We startled each other when I watered the pot. I wasn't expecting anything to move, and he wasn't expecting to get a shower. :-)

He settled back in after we had our moment!

Cute!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

How cute. He probably lives there during the day.

This frog--that we call Fred--has lived in this pot of Ivy for two years now. He keeps our back porch clean of bugs.
We are quite fond of him.

I love the lil guys, however, DH is not fond of their little "leavings" on the deck. We have about 5 or 6 that tuck themselves into the siding on the inside of our deck.....will try to get a pic. They serenade us at night.......LOUDLY!!! What a joyful noise to me! It is said that the health of your property can be determined by the amphibian population and if that is the case, our's is very healthy. Everywhere we step there is a little "froglet" about the size of one's little finger hopping out of the way of our big feet.

Camdenton, MO(Zone 6a)

joannabanana - I was glad he waited for me to get the camera so I could take a picture of him. He posed pretty nicely, I think!

morganc - A natural "bug zapper," huh? That's cool that Fred has lived on your back porch for 2 years! We have frogs and toads here and there in our yard, but this is the first one I've seen in one of my containers. Unfortunately, he left the other day when my husband had to move the pot to reach something. He hasn't come back to that pot, but he's probably somewhere else in the yard. I have plenty of other places for him to make a home.

bugme - I love to hear the song of the frogs in the evening, too! Yesterday I saw one of those tiny brown ones near the spigot. I didn't have a chance to get the camera before he was gone, but I'm sure I'll see him or one of his buddies again. I see those pretty often in my flower beds. I think they are Northern Spring Peepers. They are so cute! The one in my photo is a Pickerel Frog. I had never seen one of those in my yard before.

This is Fred IN his home. He spends the day snuggled down between the terracotta pot and the plastic pot filled with Ivy. I should have re-potted the Ivy last year, but I didn't have the heart to change his home. I water him daily to keep him moist from our heat.

One morning when I looked out the window Fred was sitting on the porch by his pot all hunched down and scared looking. I had unthinkingly moved the Ivy plant to a plant stand that raised it about an additional foot off the ground. He could see it, but could not get in it.

I pointed it out to my husband who thought I was nuts until.........I quietly went outside and rescued his home and returned it to its original location......and three seconds later Fred jumped in it. My husband's mouth dropped open. He thinks I can communicate with the frog now! :-)

Very cute! That makes a nice little hidey-hole for him. I must have somehow communicated with my frog, too. When I went out to water my spearmint this afternoon, I saw that he was back! Maybe he'll stick around and eat some bugs for me this summer.

You have entered the "frog whisperer zone" I love Frogs, toads, tadpoles great little creatures.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL...............Frog Whisperer Zone..............LOL

But I do love them.........I once took a stick and kept tapping the side of a snake when he had a frog's leg in his mouth. The frog was almost bleating like a sheep, and I kept tapping the snake until he opened his mouth and the frog jumped away.

I do not like snakes.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 7b)

redmule, love the "frog whisperer" zone comment. There was one tucked behind the cushion on one of my chairs this morning and I had to move him to one of the plants since we expected company today. I tend to treat them as pets talking to them and DH is getting worried.......I've even named them..........LOL.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I bet the little fellow was listening to you too. Sometimes talking to them is better than talking to your husband because you don't get an answer you don't want to hear. Glad you liked the comment, it was too good to pass up, wasn't it??? Oh, you are so lucky to have so many "froglets" I still have tadpoles in my fountains; just swimming up a storm. Also got baby lizards hatching out, saw one yesterday. Have you tried the paper form to make a container yet? I am going to start one tonight and see what developes. Got some gloves to work in the cement , last time I worked with bare hands (wrong move) they are finally getting better. Sometimes I am silly.

ridesredmule - Love the Frog Whisperer Zone!

morganc - I do not like snakes either. Kudos on your frog rescue. I would not have known what to do.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I was standing on these big rocks, and the poor frog was in one of the crevices. Usually when we get close they hop away.......when this little guy didn't hop but bleated instead, I knew there had to be a reason. So I grabbed a very long stick from one of the potted Dahlia plants. So, from the rock, I was a bit of a ways from him....and had a very long stick.

And of course I DID tell the snake to let him go! :-)

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Well, did he do it??? Did he let the frog go?? Don't keep us waiting :)

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, he let the frog go.......who immediately jumped in the pool......and I hurried away.

I only had to tap him two or three times to get his attention off of lunch.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Great!! You are a Frog Hero. The snake had to catch him another snack.
Now we can go back to the container gardening. Thanks

Meet Ralph & Rita, two of the many tree frogs that tuck themselves into the siding during the day to get outta the heat I guess. We've had them return for several years now, considering the deck home. We're not bothered by too many bugs either.

aaaaaaaaaahhhh, a nice dip in the pool to cool off.

That is cute as can be. I love frogs. I have a frog that lives in one of my ponds
that my goldfish are in. His head(the frog) is about two inches wide so he is pretty good size.
I keep a wire on the pool so my dog doesn't get in there. She and fish do not go
together very well. She loves water but will not leave the fish alone. So I have to protect my fish.
They keep the mosquitoes under control too (the frog) along with the fish. Got too many critters
to talk about ,so I got to keep them straight for me) :) getting older everyday.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 7b)

redmule, that pond is on the deck. DH has another one in the back yard that will EVENTUALLY be finished. I wanted to start out with a small pond but, NOOOO, had to be huge (it could be a swimming pool). We have the liner in and the rains filled it over the winter which must be why we have so many froglets.........they are like trillions it seems like, you can't walk out there without one jumping to avoid your feet. Our old dogs learned after a few times of trying to bite them (foaming at the mouth) to leave them alone.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

They must be baby toads. They are adorable as babies. I have two inground ponds, I built when I was a tad bit younger and one is in need of repair. One above ground which is also needing help. Got a dry stream bed going into one that is rather neat. You will get it finished. Where there's a will there is a way. The frogs will have a container to live in when they are near us, won't they?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

bugme---how cute your small guy is.....and Ralph and Rita are very smart.

Camdenton, MO(Zone 6a)

ridesredmule - I'd love to see a photo of your dry stream bed and your ponds.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Here we go!!! will start with pools without the wire cover, that is what the sticks are fo to hold it.
This keeps my dog out of the pool. Fish in-dogs out. Frogs go as they may. Under the liner
of the dry stream. I saw him wigglling around, well the liner was moving.

Very nice!! I see you have some gnomes guarding the pond... and a curious puppy dog checking things out. Border patrol, maybe? ha, ha. He (she?) is cute! Thanks for sharing.
