This bird has been coming around just the past day or so. At first I thought it was a female house finch but it's a bit bigger and "thicker" and the head is a bit different. From my bird books I think it might be a female Indigo Bunting. I have not seen the male if that is what it is.
It has been feeding at our finch feeders as well as our tube that has various nuts and sunflower seeds in it.
Location is Southwestern Michigan.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Female House Finch or Indigo Bunting?
Hi, It is a female House Finch.
Yep, House Finch.
Indigo Bunting doesn't have the streaking on the breast.
Resin
Yep, like pellatory and Resin said, you have a female house finch. If the male comes around he'll have a reddish head and upper chest.
I have tons of 'em.
the Hackster
We have tons of both male and female house finches that regularly visit the feeders. Dozens of them. Also have a purple finch pair once in a while.
But this female is bigger then the others and isn't as streaked on the head and is the only one that feeds at the Goldfinch feeders. Which made me question what it was.
Oh well, was hoping for a different bird. Thanks again!
Now, that is something I don't have a photo of - purple finch.
I'm a novice at this, but am really enjoying it. To me, finding a new bird is like getting a new baseball card when I was growing up.
Our Purple finch pair don't appear to stay in the area during the summer but they have stopped by the feeders for about a week at a time during migration since last fall. So hoping to see them again this fall.
Makes me feel good that we helped them as a rest stop. Hope they stay one year though.
