I need to know if its going to cause any harm to move Nutmeg later tonight into another pen? I've already got babies falling out of the box & I have to go put them back in bc she can't get them in. Two in the last couple hours. The babies are wanting to eat & drink but they can't get back up bc of the way its set up. She's still got a few eggs but only one looks like its a possible hatch. I have a photographic memory so I can put the eggs exactly like she has them from the box to the next lower sided box. We are not going to be in town tomorrow & its a trip I can't put off. I have no one to check them during the day. I'm pretty sure I can move them & not bother them badly. I figure the rest of the eggs either aren't good.. or they aren't going to hatch till later tonight into tomorrow. Any advice?
moving mama & babies?
Just make sure she is not where she can get back to the other pen or she may take her brood back to it.
I don't see why you can't move her tonight move the eggs first then the baby's and then her so she will know all are with her and none are left behind.
If you can do it after dark it would work better she will be settled for the night and not as fussy.
We move ours. And as Harmony says, wait till it is dark and she is ready for bed.
thanks guys.. i moved her & she promptly left the nest & refused for half an hour to get back on.. she made a "new" nest in another corner.. so i put her back but took the box out so the chicks can get around. She seems happy in the more confined box. Guess i'll just have to pray she doesn't get too hot tomorrow.. no eggs have hatched since 4 pm.. no holes.. no peeps.. I'm guessing the rest are bad.
Don't give up on the rest yet. Have you candled them?
I hope all is okay for her today.. I know it's hard when you can't be there..
Moms can be fickle about their nest I hope she has been okay today let us know.
the other eggs I just pulled.. They are cold & she had buried them in the nesting material & was sitting on the other side of the pen with her babies. It had been a full 24 hrs since one hatched... and I was bad & helped it bc it had its head stuck halfway out for like 4 hrs & the white stuff was drying to it. It looked misserable & Nutmeg kept stepping on its little head that was exposed & ignoring it. If it doesn't live.. i can live with that.. but i couldn't let it appear to be suffering that way in this heat.
9 babies total 5 eggs that were ice cold. I may candle them idk.. i didn't see much point. she's got her babies & won't stay with the other eggs.. this last chick she only took bc I helped then put it under her wing & told her to nice to it.
Nutmeg may be a good mom, may be a bad mom.. either way.. chickens are very rude moms.. she steps on the babies like they don't exist. Squashed their heads down into the nest, oops.. i want to walk there.. didn't see u.. don't care now.. i'll just take another step & step on ur sister/brother. Its awful! But then when she wants to play mommy.. she wants them right there when she calls.
I want chickens that will sit in my lap & let me pet them.. how do i get that? I am nice, I spoil them.. yet.. some of these chickens look at me like they think i'm going to cut thier heads off.. i keep telling them.. ur a banty.. u r safe.. I will not waste my time on eatting u.. ur skinny.. but still they are wary of me. A few Buff Orps will get in my lap for a min if I have bread. but thats it. So.. what do I do with nutmegs babies so that they are perfect little lap chickens?
Trip went ok.. Nutmeg dumped the feed all over the pen.. dumped the water too & soaked into the board.. so idk how long they were without water.. she only does that when I ignore her.. should have know she'd do it today. So i had to move them to the other pen (large mesh sided pop up dog crate).
I don't know what to tell you there greykyttyn. Some of our chickens are more friendly then others are.
We found that some of the ones that we raised without mothers seemed to be more friendly, because we held them more and payed alot more attention to them. That was our oldest girls, our brown ones come right for us all the time. We had a barred rock that would jump on my back when I was bent over to give another one grapes that I picked for them. I think she wanted to get higher up to pick her own.
Sometimes it seems the breed of chicken makes a difference too, just like we found some breeds of roos were nasty and some aren't.
We now have a brooder that we put them in when we figure the weather is nice enough for them outside in it. I'm not there to handle them that much, and when my boyfriend works, he just doesn't have the time to handle them all that much. Hopefully that will change when I find a job up there and move there.
That is the million dollar question Greykyttyn.. I baby every chick I hatch.. pick them up, feed goodiez, talk to them, etc. Some love to come visit for no reason.. some don't.
I have one right now that just cracks me up when I'm around it.. It's a first to hatch lavender split roo.. the funniest 1/2 bald thing ever. He sqawks if you pick him up, but if you don't pick him up, he will get on you some how.. but DON'T touch! He will squeek so loud if you touch him! He picks a fight with a bigger one trying to defend his hatchmates, then runs away full speed and lands in my hair..
The new Modern Game babiez seem to fight over who gets to climb in my hand.. they are very friendly...
Who knows.. really, sometimes it's a shock.. but I know what you mean.. I only have 2 true lap chickens.. Dot and Snowshoe... they will sit as long as I will.
Nutmeg likes to use me for a escape roost. If something bothers her she lands in my hair or on my shoulder or grabs the edge of a bra strap & beats the living daylights out of me with her wings trying to keep ahold of me. BUT if I pick her up... she's not soo thrilled. She'll come up & talk to me, hop on my leg to grab bread then she's off again. She's more snuggly since she went broody than anything, but it gave me an excuse to force her to snuggle at first too.
Most Chicks are very friendly mine want to get in my hand and are curious to see what i have.
But it seems as they age they become more cautious and tend to be more stand offish.
Most of my hens will still come to me but hate to be touched or picked up like they did as chicks.
I would say let them come to you most chicks hate to be held but welcome being able to climb on you if you sit amongst them.
Then as they get use to you they will let you pick them up but never force them to do things if they ever get afraid of you they won't trust you to handle them.
Take it slow and if you offer them things when you come to see them you can feed them from your hand and gain their trust thru that way too.
Kassy i'm right the opposite my brooder chicks are much friendlier than my ones who are with their mom.
But i raise OEGB who are known to have high strung personality's the hens really protect their babys .
Whenever someone comes close to the cage where they are the hen gives a warning to the chicks and they run under her.
So basically she is teaching them to fear me or any human so this makes it difficult to get close to these chicks.
Nutmeg clucks & the chicks come out to see me. i was all prepared for the attack when i picked up a baby but she didn't seem to care. one yellow one pecks me but other than that they keep their distance still.
How are the Baby's doing???
lively. i haven't been here much due to getting ready at teh place we have the 4th of July party. Mom's been watching them during the day. She says they are a lively bunch & lil piggys like mama. They ate 4 cups of chick starter yesterday. i was .. shocked. My other bantys never ate that much. A 4 cup bowl would last 24 hrs. But nutmeg (miss piggy) likes to eat.. very well. She eats everything it seems, but watermelon & has passed on her love of food to her babies. She crawled up into my hand this morning clucking. I'm guessing looking for treats of bread. I've been out of them for a few days. I need to get pictures but it will be most likely tomorrow before I do since its pouring down rain & dark in the sun room so pictures are hard to get anyways.
Sounds like so much fun Greykyttyn.. Mine are eating by the handfulls too!! I was shocked..
I am going to put mine outside this weekend so when I'm gone I don't have to worry about them.. I want to get pics so bad.. but just don't have time right now.
Happy 4th of July to you and yours!
Good to hear your baby's are doing great and they have good appetites too LOL
Okay kiddo.. we need pics greykyttyn!!
Take your time with the pics no rush enjoy your baby's.
I'm so glad things turned out so well for you and the baby's are so precious and fun to have.
Have Fun {:~)
