Tornado

Marinette, WI(Zone 4b)

This is what a chicken run looks like when a tornado went over head.
Girls were all in the coop and the coop was OK.
This happened in 2007.
Boyfriends friend wasn't as lucky, tornado was up in the air here, but touched down and took out his friends barn.

That's amazing - were you home?

It was at my boyfriend house. Our chickens are there. He was home at the time, and it was dark, so he never saw it coming. And he does get a lot of high winds there, so he really didn't think it was going to be a tornado. It did make the freight train sound that tornadoes make when it went over the house. Luckly it didn't touch down there, they called it a hopper, because it would touch down for a while and then go back up into the air. Lots of damage was done in the area, barns, a firehouse and even a resort got hit badly.
Our chicken runs have lots of trees to give them shade at different times of the day. Even a Mulberry tree is in one that I know they are going to love when it starts bearing fruit.
A number of trees were damaged by it and clean up was a mess. We still have a big tree that I know of that was damaged high up. Two of the big branches are split in half, but they are still growning. They will end up coming down sometime during a big wind storm I'm sure. They are not near the house or the chicken coop though or we would have them taken down.
He had an outdoor swing that had a top on it. That was picked up and flipped over, so the top broke on it.
He lives on high ground, and the winds even knock over our plants at times.

We have a hurricane every ten years or so, but you know it's coming even so, the damage is incredible, the ocean rises 14 feet, I can't imagine a tornado - a lot more powerful than a hurricane. I'm glad everyone's alright. Are you able to seal up the chickens, or are they inside the house for a few days

They were all in their coops when it hit, and luckly the tops of the trees that broke went over the fences or inside the fences of the runs. The only fence that did get a little damage to it was the one that seperates the 2 runs. We got very lucky there. And also very lucky none of them landed on their coops.
If there had been any damage to the outside fence, he would have let them free range for a while when he was home while he got it fixed.
They use to be free range chickens, until they started digging way to many things up. Now they only free range for short time in the evening, so they can't do as much damage. They even dug me a new flower bed one summer when they did free range.
I don't want the hurricanes either. My daughter-in-laws mother has tried to talk me into moving to Florida. No way! Her house got hit by 3 hurricanes in one year.
Here, at least I can say that I have never seen a tornado. (I'm knocking on wood as I typed that).
