What a hen, she adopted two babies.

We had two barred rock hens hatch babies at about the same time. One is a second time mother as she hatched babies last year, her name is KJ. Usually mama hens want nothing at all to do with other hens babies and will peck at them. We would let them out sometimes to wonder while we were out and of course the two mamas (KJ and Poozie) would decide to fight, we had to keep them seperated in the yard. The babies however would seem to go to KJ, she never pecked at them, but if KJs babies went near Poozie she did peck them. back in their pens and runs Poozie found a way to escape out of her run and would leave and let her babies there and go off pecking and hunting. This happened several times so we just put her back in the big pen and gave the babies to KJ who is caring for them like she had them all along. The picture is of KJ with one of Poozies babies on her back. What a mama she is.

You know I watch her with them and it is like they were always hers. A while ago I wish I would have had a camera. They were all gathered around a piece of cantaloupe shell pecking, mama and babies. So cute. The babies get along well too. She is a great mama hen.

Glad I made you smile.

My Doves are like that i had a dedicated female sit on and egg that never hatched when i took it she was so sad.
So i went to another nest a pair had just hatched 2 baby's i took one and placed it under the sad female.
She took right to it and snuggled it under her and had a look of contentment about her.
Her and her mate raised that little baby just fine and then laid 2 eggs and hatched their own.

Mothers are awesome when it comes to loving their baby's **Thanks for the touching story Smedgekles :~)**

I love it :)

We had a young chick that seemed to think it was a mom. It was about 1 week older then the others. We didn't want to chance putting them together at first. Just in case the bigger one would pick on the smaller ones.
We put one in with the older chick to see how they would do, and the older chick actually called it over to food. Hmmmmmmmm I think this should have told us that the older chick was a rooster!
The older one was a great big brother to them. All 4 of them would cuddle up to him to sleep.
Unfortunatly, we lost him to bubble foot this spring. :(
