CLOSED: This woodpecker has me stumped - Downy or Hairy

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

I did a search and saw some woodpeckers like the one I'm trying to ID. I understand that Downys have dots on their tails and Hairy's don't. According to my Stokes book, Downys are around 6" long and Hairys are about 9".

When I compare the length of the bird to the suet holder, I figure that this bird isn't 9" long, but I don't see any dots, either. So is it a downy or a hairy?

Downy - it has black spots on the outer tail feathers.

Thinks Resin. I still don't see the dots on the outer tail feathers, they look straight black to me, but the size alone may me think Downy.

I've enlarged the pic, and put on red arrows to the black spots on the white outer tail feathers, hope this helps!

I was doing the same thing you did.

I enlarged it and looked hard and saw them.

Thanks for taking the time to educate me.

the Hackster, that's me - my Harley Road King has a sidecar, which is called a hack, thus my friends call me the Hackster.
