Whats happening to my squash plants?

Maggie Valley, NC

OK...

So my squash were doing really well...

Now a lot of the "under" leaves are turning yellow and dying off...

Squash seem to be doing OK for now but I am wondering whats will happen next...

Have you seen any evidence of squash vine borers? Look for a little mound of sawdust looking matter near the base of the plant.

I think of vine borers as causing sudden wilting of many leaves. My squash plants loose a leaf now and then. If the plant gets dry and stressed it can loose leaves, some turning yellow first. Luckily the plant will snap back quickly with a good rain or watering.

Nope... checked for borers already... don't see it...

Plus its not the whole plant its the leaves that are under the big ones... the ones on top seem to be fine...

Maybe they're just being crowded out by the bigger leaves and not getting enough sun. Mine do that and I just clip off the yellowing leaves.

i have to constantly watch for squash bugs on my plants. they are easy to kill, i just mash em with my gloved fingers, and i look for their little coppery colored eggs on the underside of the leaves and remove them. this is an everyday thing. they make the squash plants look unhealthy with yellow leaves, sometimes making an entire plant collapse. i am having to keep them watered good now. we are having a hot and dry spell.

i can handle the bugs in the garden. now, i dont know what i will do about the deer and raccoons. the fight over the corn has started though! lol

My squash is staying small. Is it because of the weather, 67 degrees today? This is about the third day with those temps. Plants look good it just the vegetable is not growing. Any advise is appreciated.

Thank you,

No clue about the yellowing, but I posted some new tags under "Squash." They're links to a thread where another DGer discusses using an oversize syringe to inject Bt into her squash vines right above any Squash borers she happens to find. Says it leaks out, and doesn't hurt the vine at all! She's having good success keeping her squash vines thriving.

Just thought ya'll might like to know this. She gets the oversize syringes from her local feedstore, or a benevolent veteranian... the Bt can be secured at a feedstore as well.

With only the lower leaves yellowing, I would suspect water stress. Did they go thru a really dry spell? The leaves will drop off but won't hurt the plant or the squash.

I think the watering issue is my problem. It's been so dang hot here the past 2 weeks it's hard to keep them properly watered. DH broke our moisture meter, which doesn't help any. :(
