Opossums and dogs

Most of my life, I've lived in various parts of the country, the two have not gotten along, and only one side has won out.

After an incident last night, I did a little net research. I came upon a site advising that I train my dogs not to fight with them or make my dogs sleep inside so that the opossums are not harmed.

Anyone else have opossum issues? Are they just so foolish that they bother dogs ten times their size on a regular basis?

Edit: That same website suggested that if I find a dead one in my yard, that I wait at least 4 hours before throwing it out in case it was playing dead/opossum.
