Hello, I am new to posting on the forums at Dave's GardenL; I've been lurking for several weeks. I don't have any poultry yet but am hoping to get some ducks by this spring; I finally have my hubby convinced we need ducks. With all the research I've been doing I think Swedish ducks are good for beginners; does anyone have an opinion on this breed? I am wanting good egglayers and foragers. I live in the city of Portland, Oregon so am limited to only 3 females but since we have a high fence around the whole backyard I may fudge and get 5 or 6. I've been doing lots of research so don't have any questions yet but I'm sure I will once I get the ducklings (hopefully late winter) I will. I know most of you have chickens and other assorted animals....I really enjoy reading about them and seeing all the pics....the honking/growling chicken stories made me really laugh; one of my neighbors has chickens and I have heard one of the growl....it's funny.

Hello
Welcome Loreen!! So glad to see new people here! I'm kinda the class clown, always trying to make people laugh and have fun.
I have no advice whatsoever on ducks.. but I'm sure others will help you on that. I look forward to seein your pics!!
Welcome. We have chickens and ducks but I am not familiar with that breed. We have Rouens, Crested Buffs and a Fawn and white mix. Ducks are a lot of fun, you will enjoy them.
Yes welcome! I have no ducks either and have had chickens only a year but you will get all kinds of help here,I`m sure someone will help you with the duck question soon.
Welcome Loreen! Great to have a new member of the "clan"!! I have Pekin ducks, as well as domestic mallard, Muscovy.....and Blue Swedish!! Yaaaay! Love them! Great choice for a first duck. They lay well and are fun to watch. I give mine a kiddie pool for their swimming fun. They adore it. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. My ducks began to lay eggs at around 5 months. They are a delight to watch.
CMoxen, thanks for the heads up on when ducks tend to start laying. We have 4 young females so that is good to know.
I have Cayugas and Calls and i love them my Cayugas are free range and my Calls are in a large ground pen.
They are fun too watch and are really entertaining to have i have the kiddie pool like Claire does.
When i clean it out an refill it they get in it and dive and jump out and run across the yard then fly back to the pool diving into the water.
They are excellent Buggers i bet there isn't a leaf or piece of grass they don't look under i no longer have a problem with pill bugs they have eaten tons of them.
They eat flying things as well i have seen them catch moths and gnats and i hope mosquito's
No ducks yet for me but am hoping to find a pair of fawn and white runner ducks any time. If I can't find them by the end of the summer, I'll order from Holderreads for next spring.
Welcome Loreen,
No ducks here, only chickens. But my boyfriends daughter did want him to get ducks too. He said the chickens are enough.
I tried to talk him into some because I knew where I could get some free.
No go. :(
Welcome Loreen!! No ducks here either, I'd love some, but I'm kind of afraid they'd not get along with my chickens. :(
