Banana offsets

Cleveland, OH(Zone 5a)

My dwarf cavendish produced a noticeable shoot yesterday. I was wondering, What do you do with the parent plant? Are you supposed to leave it be, cut it down, or what? please someone who knows from experience help a new banana grower!

I grow dwarf Orinoco nana trees and when you get a "pup" it means your adult tree is getting ready to bear fruit. It needs to push out pups first. Leave them...you should get several, and let them grow to 3-4 ft. then I guess you can thin them but I would leave one so the "mom" will put forth energy to make fruit and not keep making "pups" Hope this helps.

What should I fertilize my banana plant in a container?

a 10-10-10 is said to be really good for nanas. One cup of that every 3 weeks is good. Also the cheapest brand of lawn fert. works just as well. That was told to me by people at www.bananas.org I highly recommend them!

i use about 1/2 tsp of miracle gro just sprinkled of the top of the container with my plants, usually once or twice a week depending on how much i water which seems to be daily for them lately. miracle gro is 24-8-16 the plants get 1 to 2 times a week. also every other week, i apply of 0-5-0 bat guano fertilizer seems to do good. i may add Epsom salt to the mix if i see growth stop or even slow with these babies and mama.

thanks

Nexus, I had wondered about using epsom salts... i have one tree with fruit on it and more pups coming, if i add the salts, will that slow down the pups and help the mom put her energy to the fruit?

I really do not know I was wondering what effect it has and developing plants.

Epsom salt is good for about every plant, it adds minerals to the soil. Mom will die after she fruits and the pups are to take her place. Whatever helps the pups grow is fine.
