It's a youngster, Hack. The females' beaks are red. That's the best way to tell them from the juveniles.

are you sure it's a cardinal at all? It's hard to tell in the pics, but something doesn't look right to me.

OK, I couldn't see the crest in either of the pictures and the blotchiness of the coloring didn't seem to match for me. Good to know.

The crest is thin and wispy on juvs., not too conspicuous
