Bougainvillea recommendations for containers + overwintering

Pelham, NY

Can anyone recommend a particular bougainvillea for containers? I know some are appropriate for hanging baskets (I assume they have a trailing habit) and others are more upright - I'm more interested in upright unless someone makes a compelling argument otherwise. Thorns are also a consideration and also any cultural advice would be welcome. Specifically, how would I overwinter them in a Zone 7 climate? Am I better nursing it through the winter as a houseplant or forcing dormancy? Logee's recommends dormancy (http://www.logees.com/ftg/CULTURAL-bougainvillea.asp) but I'm worried that my finished basement isn't cold enough to hold it dormant. Thanks!

Hi Mark, Every year I bring my bougainvillea in the house in their pots. Place them in front of south facing windows and treat like house plants. I don't overwater them and go light on the fertilizer and they bloom all through the winter, not as much as summer but sparingly. I also give them a trellis to climb.
Hope this helps.

Peg
