Chicken Coop Plan Jackpot

Pine Grove, PA(Zone 6a)

After I decided I wanted to try raising chickens. I tried finding plans for a chicken coop I could build myself. I found very little. I ended up buying a "plan" that was incomplete and useless. So, my DH and I just muddled through it. A great feat for two pencil pushers.

Yesterday, I found the following website, which is a treasure trove of plans for various types of coops, brooders, barns, whatever your need maybe.

http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/abeng/plans/index.htm

Note: There is a caveat that indicates due to the age of some of these plans, they may not be to code.

I hope others find this site useful too.

That is a great site, very informative.
have you decided on a coop yet ? i would love to see what you have decided . :)
here is what i have done and i did it all by myself and i have no carpenter skills and i hammer like a girl LOL cuz i m a girl LOL
its a simple cattle panel with 2x4 and chicken wire
i made mine so its stationary.
then i did a cover on one half end. Then that is where the nest area is and feeding area.
Door on one end is a simple little door with hinges and a hook to latch.

Great link!! Every coop you could ever imagine is on that one! Thank you for sharing!

Let me guess.. Was it the "playhouse" coop that you bought the plans to? I did.. They were $35. for plans that had no instructions for the roof or the inside of the coop area.. AND all the measurements were not correct! The first one I built took me countless hours of figuring.... Then the guy wants me to send him pics and notes about improvements so he can post it online.. Huge rip off if you ask me.. Live and learn...

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the link juris, we are always looking for more plans. Our flock has expanded by more than 25 since February (broody hens galore) so we need to update or add on pens.

taynors - how are you going to fix it come winter? Will you do anything else to it then? I was thinking your winters were colder than mine & I have to put plastic sheeting on my coop from Oct to April.

My thought is to get straw and insulate with that around the coop.
they do have a covered area on the end . So with my thinking i will just stack bails up around that area.
Next year we will do a coop in the woods for a cooler summer .

Boy Taynors that a spectacular Hoop House you constructed I'm also working on a coop for my Turkeys it's slow going it's over 100 here during the day.

yikes that is a hot one Harmony . I lucked out and did it before the heat. but it was windy !
I need more coops LOLLLL

We lucked out on a coop. My husband was talking to the husband of one of my coworkers and told him that he had
to build me a chicken coop this weekend and he really wasn't looking forward to it since we didn't agree on construction. :) Lo and behold, they had an 8ft x 6ft kids playhouse that they didn't want anymore and couldn't get rid of it!!! They just delivered it a few hours ago.

Not only did he NOT have to build it, it was FREE!!! The floor is semi-rotted, but we're going to knock it out and use the deep litter method anyway. It needs the windows screened, nest boxes and a roost and a good paint job! It's on it's
side in our driveway right now.

DH made a small, portable run for the girls (they are 2 months old), but I have to break the bad news that it needs to be bigger. :)

Thats Great I love it when i run across a deal like that.
I got this coop from a man i buy pigeons from he is moving and selling his coops i got this one for $20.
All it needed was a little elbow grease and some hardware cloth on the bottom.
The Top on the back flips up like a door i really like it i'm thinking of adding a light and using it for a brooder

Sweet deals you two got .

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

I wish I knew someone who wanted our old chicken coop! Needs a little refurbishing but otherwise it's fine and is a good base to build on. We just got an 8 x 12' shed that we're modifying for hen use.

You guys got great deals; what a stroke of luck!

greenhouse_gal, put it up on craigslist of kijiji in your area. I'm sure someone will take it off your hands. Before DH built our coop, I was looking at those sites a couple times a week to see if anyone had something so he didn't have to build. I did see some, but they were too far away. Atlanta craigslist seems to have items from the whole state of GA...
