Is this a red shouldered hawk, or a red tailed hawk?

Joshua, TX

I seen this big guy for several days on a cattle fence, and he was soooo big. I followed him and finally got a picture of him, but I'm not sure is he's a red shouldered hawk or a red tailed hawk?

This is a crazy looking bird! His feathers look like the bark on the oak trees. Can someone help me ID this bird please?

First one looks like a Red-tailed Hawk.

The second one looks like a member of the Caprimulgidae family (Night Hawks, Nightjars).

I'm sure Resin will know which.

Great shots!

I think you're right, I just looked those up and I think the second bird is called a common nighthawk. Thanks for the lead. :) You're right about the first one also thanks a lot

Your welcome and thanks for posting them. We rarely see any birds from that family. Great job!

Yep, Red-tailed Hawk and Common Nighthawk. Excellent catch on the latter, a very hard bird to find when perched, the camouflage is so good - remember to add it to BirdFiles http://davesgarden.com/guides/birdfiles/go/617/ - it'll be the first pic there!

Do you think that this one would be better to post because you can see it's wings in this picture... it's just kind of a dark picture.

Kool thx for posting the Night Hawk. I always hear them and see them in the evening in the sky, but to get one in a tree for a pic HA! Nice catch teresa05!
