you have entered this image as the Banded Tiger Moth (Apantesis vittata), but when I searched on the net it looks more like the Harnessed Tiger Moth (Apantesis phalerata). Take a look at the two species on this page from BugGuide: http://bugguide.net/node/view/5750/bgpage

If you agree I will move your 2 images to our page for that species here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/2254/

#5 is the banded tiger moth.

Here is a wing open picture of one of the ones I have photographed.

That is very helpful but doesn't seem to solve the problem. The image of the banded tiger moth on that page does not have the extra white mark across the end of the wing, shown on your specimen. I have looked at a lot of images of both species and most banded tiger moths lack that cross bar, whereas most images of the Harnessed Tiger Moth (Apantesis phalerata) include it. Look at the image of the Harnessed Tiger Moth by Amy Levy on this page : http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/Files/Live/Species/8000/8169.shtml
and at this page too: http://www.pbase.com/m3ling/image/85490870

Here is the Banded Tiger Moth looking quite different from yours: http://www.marylandmoths.com/Html/Arctiidae/Arctiinae/Arctiini/Apantesis_vittata.html

This page: http://www.hsu.edu/content.aspx?id=6580 is particularly helpful, showing both species and discussing the difference.

I still think it is more likely to be the Harnessed Tiger Moth,

I went on and sent the pictures to a professional friend of the family, and asked if they would take a peek at them for me =)
Will give a better confirmation than what I could do just comparing images!!!
And maybe give some better advice on telling the two species apart.
