I have a pot of hyacinth bulbs that have been kept outside and watered and have now died back. One of them I dug up a bit to see how they are and it was nice and firm. Should I just move the pot to the garage and stop watering, or dig them up and dry? If I kept them inside at around 76 degrees would that be cool enough? Or can I dig them up and plant them now? I think I read they can be planted in summer if in a spot that doesn't get watered, but they would get water where I want to put them. They weren't terribly expensive, but I hate to throw out good (potential) plants. There will be other Hyacinths added to them in the fall as well.
Finished Hyacinths in a pot-dig up? plant now? store?
I'm going clean them up and bring them into the garage for now. Any opinions or experience appreciated.
I've always planted my potted bulbs as soon as possible in the spring. But based on what I've been reading here lately, and obviously you have, too, bulbs are better if kept dry in the summer. I dug up my tulip bulbs for the first time this summer, and am storing them in an onion bag in the basement. So I think you've done the right thing. I actually am on this forum today to see if I should dig up my alliums, too, because I don't have good luck getting them to rebloom and I have them planted in the wettest part of my yard.
Plant them in the ground this fall - they will come back for several years.
