Do June Bugs eat leaves?
I laid slug bait, there is no tunneling, holes are both from the side of the leaf and starting in the middle. No caterpillar frass or webbing. Bottoms of leaves are clean.
I looked for Japanese beetles last night in the dark, but saw only one June Bug on a leaf - did not appear to be eating, but maybe he just got there?
Help!
Okay, who is eating my Salvia and Joe Pye Weed?
Somethinmg does that to my brugs.
almost looks like you used a hole punch!
pyro:
Since I have had the same problem, I can tell you that it is Japanese beatles. The only thing that has worked is Orthene ( Acephate 75 SP--purchase at farm and garden store).
Core:
The same things goes for your Brugs. JB love brugs !! Follow the directions and be sure to spray as late in afternoon as you can, Orthene will burn plants if there is any bright sunlight.
Also, unroll that curled up leaf on your canna and see if you see small, white (1") caterpillars. That's your culprits. Shoot them with that Orthene.
Hope this helps.
That's what my rose mallows, brugs, roses and a lot of other things are looking like right now - seems like the JP Beetles are winning this year at my house. I wish you all the best in your battles!
I HATE Japanese Beetles!!!!! They skeletonize plant leaves and make your plants look horrible (not to mention they fly into you and give you the creeps). The last couple of years I have used the lures and bags (following the directions on the correct placement) and they worked fairly well. Not this year though. I had trouble finding new lures (must have been a run on them) and by the time I got them, the nasty flyers had wrecked my small strawberry plantings.
I try not to use chemicals because of the birds, butterflies and hummers I love, but I have soaped down some of the plants with a little gentle dish soap and water in a sprayer, knocked them off and stomped on them (it helped to relieve the anger).
Core, the neat little rows of holes in your cannas indicate leaf rollers. They borrow in while the leave is still rolled up and make holes through all the layers. Once they get int hey can do all sorts of damage. They are cats so BT works best and is the least harmful.
pyromomma, while I don't think this is what you are contending with I wanted to show everyone one of my biggest pest problems. These things will go through a tomato quicker than a couple of chickens. I have had them destroy amaryllis bulbs completely in one night!! Thank goodness, this year they are relatively scarce and I have seceded in controlling them with hand picking, I take great delight in pulling off their heads. In fact this photo was made just before an execution of several took place. ( My DW says "How gross!!) This is actually a small one, as they get larger they get aggressive and will actually try to fight you making a barking sound!! Anybody know what it is?
I put this on the bug ID forum as suggested and immediately got this source of information. This is it exactly, down to the barking hiss!! See http://tinyurl.com/nyu4sr for more information.

Gessie: Try posting your photo on the bug files and somebody will probably ID it for you.
