ID this hibiscus anyone

Raleigh, NC(Zone 8a)

I'd posted the plant itself a month or so ago in the Plant ID forum, and learned it was a hibiscus. Now that it's blooming, I was hoping someone might know what variety it is. Any ideas? I love the huge, vibrant blooms it's yielding!

Definitely a Moscheutos (hardy) hibiscus but as to which one...not sure. Could be a Lord Baltimore or a Luna Red...you might want to check out the pictures in Plant Files to see which one matches your photo best. Beautiful flower whatever it is!

Nice hardy hibiscus photo. Wish I could tell you which one it is, but I'm totally "clueless" when it comes to identifying the hardy ones.

Not Lord Baltimore.

Where did this plant come from? Take a look at Luna Red http://www.soonerplantfarm.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/plants.plantDetail/plant_id/699/index.htm or more reds toward the bottom of the page http://www.soonerplantfarm.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/plants.kwsearchpost/variety/Hibiscus/index.htm

I don't recall where I bought it from. If I had to take a guess, probably Lowes. I didn't recall planting it there last year either. When it started coming up, I posted some pics in plant ID forum, and confirmed it was a hibiscus. But looking at it's placement among my cannas that surround my pond, it's obvious that when I planted it, I knew what it was and the coloring it would be. Just my old age coming into play, I guess. :)

It looks similar to my Hibiscus moscheutos, and I think mine is 'Rubrum', but I'm not finding any info online about 'Rubrum' to back it up. I doubt the tag is still with my plant.

whatever it is, it's a beauty. I love the eye catching red & the fact that it's hardy! They seem to be a favorite of my Japanese Beetles. :-( But the moles & voles haven't messed with my hardys yet. Good luck & save the seeds!

Mine are really in full bloom this year. The red (a bit "deeper" color than the photo) is almost covered with 6" wide blooms.

I have had real problems with the foliage however. The stems are thick and heavy but very fragile and I've been having to tie each up to stand. Am I doing something wrong in fertilizer, etc or is this normal??

My stems seem to be extra floppy this year ~ don't know why.

I bought a potful last summer very similar to that from Home Depot and it is Luna Red. My guess is that Lowe's and HD use the same plant suppliers... but here it is a MONTH after you posted your lovely blossom and I have yet to get BUDS on mine (Westchester County, NY). Is it possible the extra rainy June delayed the flowering of a "drought-tolerant" plant?

But you've been so cool up there that everything seems to be behind. Mine have only been blooming for a couple of weeks.

That I did! :) I got a good number off the two hibs I have, and hope to grow a few of their children for planting next summer. For those who've started them from seed, how fast do hardy hibs grow? I thought I'd start them indoors in the next month or so to give them a good start for planting next summer ... or would that throw them off their cycle?

And after looking through other pictures, I'm pretty sure it is the Luna. It's identical to every picture of other Lunas I've seen so far.

You did not indicate how tall the Hibiscus was. If the plant is about three (3) feet in height it is most likely Luna Red based of size, flower, color and leaf formation. It is definitely not Lord Baltimore which has a leaf that resembles H. coccineus.

It is right about 3 feet tall.
