Here are some blooms from today when we hit 100 degrees for the first time ever. Here is hibiscus "Neon Nova" under the sun.
100 Degree Blooms From Ft Lauderdale, FL On June 22, 2009
Jon your hibs all look really good, love the Pocahontas can't wait until ours blooms
Patrick
your coneflowers look nice too
now I see the pictures, they are beautiful as usual. Where could I find a Pocahontas or a Nightfire? I checked my big box store & they have some named "Red" for $29.99. Actually I'm finding some places with tons of varieties but it's so hard to pick & choose. And then there's the "trust" issue.
Thanks Jon, for helping to wind down my evening for me. Just what I needed. :-)
Not sure if it's in stock anymore, but I got my Pocohontas from www.hiddenvalleyhibiscus.com
Thanks Debbie and Patrick. Pocahontas is available from Hidden Valley Hibiscus. The blooms are always very nice and consistent and face upward, which is a definite plus. It also has vivid deep coloration during cooler weather. I don't see "Nightfire" currently vailable, but it is a very unique bloom. I'm not sure if others that have "Nightfire" has the same issue. The only drawback I've noticed in the 2 years I've had mine is that it is not a full day bloom in hot weather. During the hot days of summer the blooms on mine tend to start closing by mid-late afternoon. It's strictly a heat issue as the blooms stay open the whole day when its 80 degrees or less.
Jon
All so pretty, Jon, but that Neon Nova is killer. I have a lot of daylilies, and didnt realize when I got them that I seemed to have a penchant for yellow. So I need some color now....and that Neon Nova is about as much color as I can imagine. (scribbling on my wish list....)
Beautiful! I'm waiting on my Pocahontas to bloom too!
But what I don't understand is if it is sooo hot, then why are you wearing tennis shoes??? :-)
Thanks Dee and Kathy. Neon Nova is one of my better bloomers. The blooms are always very bright and can be seen from a mile away. It has good growth habits and I haven't had the need to prune it since I've had it last April. The foliage even stays green when we go through a change of seasons in the spring and fall, when many others are turning up yellow leaves adjusting to the climate change. I purchase it from Matt at Hibiscus Place in the Spring 2008. I haven't seen it available since then, which surprises me considering just how well this plant performs. You'll love your Pocahontas Dee. The blooms have very nice coloration and are a bit thicker in texture...thus they hold up very well. It's been a 2 or 3 day bloomer in cooler weather.
I've always decided to wear some kind of footwear in the yard when outside. Last year I was walking barefoot and got stung by about 6 or so bees all at the same time. I used to wear "Croc's" but Jaws (the leash trained alligator) became a little jealous that I was advertising Crocodiles instead of Alligators.
Jon
Jon, Jon, Jon...lol. You never fail to get a chuckle out of me :-)
Well, you know how some dogs like to chew on shoes. You can only imagine what "Jaws" does when she sees a pair of crocs. She flips out even more than that Geico caveman guy.
Great pics Jon.... You have a wonderful landscape..
Thanks Jon. It's quite a bit of work, but it's manageable without getting too stressed out. I'm sure everyone here can relate to that. I cut back quite s bit during the brutal hot/humid summers so it's easier to take care of.
Great photos Jon, love the way you combined you other flowers with your gorgeous hib on your landscape, sure is garden magazine photo material. I just love looking at your photos.
