Potato Expertise Needed!

I have always grown potatoes, but this is the first year that I have tried "Cesar", a potato that I think is of Dutch development.
My potatoes almost always have flowered, but this Cesar is not just flowering, it is producing little clusters of "fruit" (see the attached photo) that look almost identical to some varieties of small Thai eggplants.
My questions are :
Has anyone seen this before (on either Cesar or other varieties)?
Are these "fruit" edible like Thai eggplants?

Thanks for any advice/help.

I've had a few fruits, but that's a big cluster!

Potato fruits are said to be toxic.

I have clusters like that on every plant!

Well, all solanums have been suspected of being poisonous, but I'd sure like to hear something definitive. They look so much like Thai eggplants that I am tempted to make curry. But I don't want to discover it's my last one!

I've had these and was told that they are poisonous. I was also told that these are seeds. Not 100% if this is correct or not but it did come from a good source.

They contain seeds. Like a tomato, not an eggplant.

The thing is, that's as big as most potato fruits get. In fact, they're pretty big for potato fruits. It's very doubtful that they'd ever get big enough to use like an eggplant.

I was just gonna post my photo and ask the same thing "what is this" and "is it edible" when I found this thread.

If it's a potato seed, can I save it and plant them next year?

This http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/999896/ is one of several threads here recently from a member who's growing true potato seed [TPS].

Yes, dovey, I found that as well. And it did convince not to make curry!

Lois, you are clearly not an afficionada of Thai cuisine. Most Thai eggplants used in Thai curries, etc, never get any larger than those I have photoed. Many are much smaller (instead of "chery tomatoes", think "pea eggplants"). I am still wondering :why are pepper and eggplant fruit non-toxic and potato fruit are?

If you get them from a home-grown potato plant, they won't come true to seed, but you may get something interesting. Luther Burbank found a seed ball like that and when he planted the 23 seeds he saved from it, most of the plants were worthless, but one became the Burbank potato, which produced a mutation we now call the Russet Burbank. The seed balls will soften and turn whitish or yellow when ripe, then for saving the seeds, treat them like a tomato.

"The fact that Burbank subsequently grew more than one-half million seedlings from a deliberate hybridization program without producing another successful variety is also of interest. "

very interesting, I have them on my red pontiacs, and my chickens run through them and the corn picking weeds and bugs. sounds like I need to remove them before I end up with a curious chicken getting poisoned.

That's some interesting history. Agrinerd! Thanks for the link.
