as GardenGuyKin says, your image is not the Cross Spider (Araneus diadematus). In fact I do not think it is in the orb-weaver family. It looks to me like one of the flower spiders in the family Thomisidae.

It is similar to the Long Crab Spider (Sidymella longipes): http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/showimage/2078/
but that is an Australian species and shows some definite differences from yours.

but cannot find pictures of many of them.

We would very much like to retain your image in BugFiles, but unless you can discover its true identity, I shall have to delete it (at least until it can be identified),
