do I need to punch a hole in my galvanized bucket?

Durham, NC

I have a large galvanized bucket that I was thinking about putting some plants in, but do I need to punch holes in it? It definitely holds a lot of water when it rains, but I have always wanted to turn it into a pond, so I hate to punch holes in it... what do people think? Its the kind you get at feed stores and what not.

If you don't (perforate it), you'll need to use it as a cache container and set a smaller pot inside of it atop a coarse layer of material so the level of water accumulating in the cache container (your bucket) is ALWAYS lower than the drain hole in your growing pot. If you don't poke a hole - just make a 'pond' out of it because that, and to frustrate you if you try to grow in it w/o a hole, is it's destiny. ;o)

thanks! I punched holes in it, and I think it looks really cute with plants :)
