The Visual Benefits Of A Heavy Prune

Ft Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10a)

The first six photos were all taken this morning. All of these plants are in the ground and were heavily pruned back about 6-8 weeks ago to about 1/2 their size. Although you sacrifice blooms for a short period of time, the benefits, in the long run, are quite real and can be visually seen once they begin blooming again.
The last 7 photos are just photos from the last 3 days of various hibiscus blooms.

This photo is Hibiscus "Voodoo Magic"

Your plants are beautiful.

How old were your plants that you pruned? I have some young plants that have a single stem. I've been wondering if I should prune them.

Thanks.

Thanks much. The plants that I pruned are all about 2 years old now. I pruned some branches back about a year ago, but did not see the visual benefits I am seeing now after I did a much heavier prune this year. The difference is so much more dramatic this year after the heavier prune.
Personally I don't do much pruning at all in the first 6-12 months and just let them get settled into their new environment. I'm really not an expert at growing hibiscus, but I just prefer to have awhile before doing it. Pruning will definitely give you a better branched/fuller plant in the long run.

You can still see some of the damage that a nasty hailstorm did on some of my plants last Saturday. It wasn't a pretty picture.

A couple of other late bloomers from today. This is Hibiscus "Antique Treasure". It is a 'mini" bloom hibiscus.

Tropicman, at least "Neon Nova" caught both of your eyeballs, miens pot out and hit the screen, fortunately they popped back in after they bounce off of it.

Jon, I 'll keep saying it, you have a fantastic collection of gorgeous hibs and your photo are probably the envy of a garden magazine's photographer.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!... to all dads on this forum.

Thanks Wilfred. Yesterday was one of those rare days when everything just seemed to bloom like popcorn. It was pretty amazing. I swear I saw some of the hibiscus "high fiveing" each other yesterday morning.
