New rooster in with the flock

Bridgewater, ME

I have put my silkie rooster and his two hens in with the established flock of nine hens,my dh said there will fighting and such but just a little(we were worried because he was smaller)now the bigger hens are afraid of him and they walk way out around him as he chases them if they come near him or his little hens.My question is if the bigger hens are afraid of him how will the mating thing work they go way out around him now and want to stay clear of him.Last night was there first night in togather(they all have been togather in the same coop for two and half weeks but seperated)I thought silkes did not roost but when I went out to check on them all of the big girls were on the top roost where they always go and the silkies were on the second one up which is about three feet off the floor. One of the silkie hens was having a real hard time trying to get up there with her man and the other hen but she finally made it with a lot of trying.I was so happy that the intergrating went so well, its hard to believe that such a small rooster can team those hens around even the lead hen.

The Roo will as he becomes more comfortable around the new ladies round them up.
It will take a little time but he will begin to round them up one by one picking the ones he likes first.
This may look as if he is being mean when he chases them and catches them by the neck and forcibly mates with them.
Don't stop him he is asserting himself as the leader and "the Man" and showing the hens who he is.

The only concern i might have is if the smaller hens will be chased by the bigger hens once they begin to integrate.
I would watch them when they begin to do this to be sure the little hens don't get abused by the bigger ones.

Your roo will make himself known as soon as he knows he can trust the other hens right now these ladies are strangers to him.
But just like all males he will make his move :o)

Hi Green! I had to laugh about the hens going way around that little Roo. It reminds me of the statement " It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but rather the size of the fight in the dog that makes the difference" I have a little silkie roo also, and the lady who gave him to me told me she had to get rid if him because he would not let her husband out of the car when he arrives home from work. Don't mess with the silkie roo. LOL Haystack

When we got our first roo we stuck him in with the ladies and it was hilarious. They of course didn't care much for the presence of this new dude but soon established the pecking order and got along. One of our hens however (a Barred Rock) was the queen of the pen and she still was even with the roo there. She was top of the pecking order above the roo.
What was so funny though was that the girls were so used to getting scraps that when we walked out the back door they would come running to their pen gate waiting for goodies. We would give it to them and they would scarf it up like they hadn't eaten in a week. The roo not being used to such aggressive and hungry girls would stand up straighter and look around in that rooster stance they have like he was saying "whats going on here, these women are crazy" He would bend down every now and then to try to peck a morsel but the girls would grab it so fast all he saw was a blur. He would bolt up and have that "what's going on, it's impossible to get anything to eat around here" look on his face. Too funny.
He soon learned that if you want food you better act fast.

The silkie hen decided she needed to lay an egg so she called to the rooster to guard her while she tried,so he was busy keeping the bigger hens away from her, note the brandnew nesting boxes my dh made just for them and she is laying in the corner next to them.So he is in there with her trying to hurry up by scratching aound for her.

Meanwhile the other hen is outside all alone so I have to go out with my trusty spray bottle of water to keep the other hens away from her,so my dh picked her up and put her in the coop with the rooster and her buddy and they all got in the corner

I only have 12 hens and no rooster. You don't have to have a rooster to get eggs do you? I don't care if the eggs get fertilized or not.

Nope, no need for a roo to get eggs just to fertilize.
