I just read that chickens love hostas and I have a new hosta/fern bed going into the area where I was going to let the chickens, ducks, and geese free range. I'm planning for 2 runner ducks. Anyone know if they eat hostas? I could keep the chickens out but not the ducks as that area is next to the pond.
Do ducks like hostas?
I have no idea but to add mine eat everything thats not nailed down LOL.
My Cayuga Ducks are free range and all they do all day is doodle in the ground and eat i swear there is not one leaf they haven't looked under.
They eat alot of bugs and worms they find while doodling in the grass and leaves.
But far as greens mine mostly eat the grass and seed heads off of weeds the only other thing i have seen them eat is plum tree leaves and the green plums they could reach.

We have a yard full of hostas & the chickens never bother them other than to hide under them when it gets hot during the day. I was afraid the hostas wouldn't come up very well bc the chickens would eat them, they just dug around them, loosened the dirt & ate the bugs, biggest hostas mom's had in years. The hostas love the chickens & the chickens love the hostas. :)
Wow, that's encouraging! I guess each bird is different and I'll just have to see what gets eaten and what doesn't. But that is very encouraging.
I've got a mixed group.. lots of bantams, Welsummers, EE's & Buff Orpington's. So far they all leave them alone. The chicks love to hide in the hostas, the older chickens love to use them for shade. its the only plants they dig under & the hostas seem to love having the ground kept "tilled" under them.
