Let's see your Caladiums

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a bunch of new ones growing. I'll get some more pictures posted soon!!

Here's Miss Muffet looking good as usual.......... These are getting a little sun. They look "real nice" if planted in a mostly shaded area.

Here's Razberry Moon. This one hasn't grown on me yet

This one produces HUGE leaves. They're so big they got top heavy. I'm going to experiment by de-eyeing some.
It's a very rare caladium too!!!

Here's Ivory

do these have to be dug out in the winter i live in michigan,i just brought red rosebud. thank yous

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

In michigan they would need to be dug up. I'm in zone & and they're not listed as winter hardy here. (zone 8 or 9 i think- try the plant files)

Does anyone know how late I could start caladium bulbs here? We have a long summer. Is it too late? I grew one candidum this year that is filling out now, and realized I'd like a big cluster.

Also, what is de-eyeing? Is that to propagate them? like a potato?

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

Caladiums will have to be dug up and stored over the winter if you're in Zone 9A or below. Zone 9A would be hit and miss if they'd survive depending on how bad the winter was.

Yes, you can absolutely plant Caladiums right now in Winston Salem. With temperatures heating up you'd have plants in no time!!
De-eyeing a bulb creates a shorter although bushier plant. De-eyeing the bulb involves removing the dominant eye. The bulb then re-directs it's energy to all the secondary eyes.

I hope that helps!!

how do you store them i know in a cool place, butwhat medium. do you let the frost hit them and than dig them out?

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

You want to store them at about 60-65 degrees. The most common way I've "heard" is to store them in a Paper bag filled w/ sphnagnum moss or something similar. I wouldn't wait until the first frost!!!
Thankfully I don't have to dig mine up!! I have easily 3000 bulbs planted and I'd be crippled if I tried...lolol....

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Happy Birthday, Bill!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

if we plant in pots, can the pots just be brought into the basement or other cool environment for the winter?
I am so glad to read that it is not to late to plant them here. I did not get all of mine planted, but will do it this week!!

bloom on Aaron

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Bill, or anyone else growing Caladiums, I got mine planted REALLY late this year :( Most of them have started popping up but I'm seeing flower stalks as soon as, or even before, the plant is sending up new leaves. Should I be cutting off the flowers so I'll see more of the foliage sooner? I wouldn't mind having flowers but the foliage is really what I bought them for. Thanks!

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes, cut the blooms of with a sharp pair of scissors at an angle near the bottom. The bulb will then re-direct it's energy to producing more leaves.

Bill

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks so much Bill for the quick response! I actually got a few of Aaron planted early enough that I'm enjoying their foliage now but it's the White Wing and Gray Ghost I'm patiently waiting for. I missed out on the co-op this year but I'll be watching for it next year!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Does the Caladium bloom make seeds? The bloom reminds me very much of a Jack in the pulpit or an Alium. Is that what it makes (a spike of red seeds?) Are they fertile? I think it is very pretty, but have noticed that the leaves seem to be slowing dying down once the blossum begins. So is that why the eaves are stopping? And I, too, need to cut off the blossom, then the leaves will come back?

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

BirdieBlue,

I'm not 100% sure about the seeds. Yes, there are seeds but whether or not they're fertile I couldn't tell you.
Cutting the blooms off will definitely help the plant. Right now would be a good time for everyone to be applying some fertilizer to there plants too!!!

Next year I will be offering a liquid fertilizer that was made exclusivley for my company!! A friend of mine is in the fertilizer business and he had one of there scientist develop a fertilizer just for me!! I have about 8 bottles left but I'll have plenty for next year. I've been using it on mine and they're responding GREAT!!!! I'm really excited about being able to offer it next year!!!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the info on cutting off the flowers. I did not realize that. I love caladiums, but do have my problems getting them started. Will have to check in here more often for good advice.
