Do all hibiscus hybrids

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Throw a flower back to the original parent, sometimes I get these on a particular plant, usually,I get a single from a double variety, but in these instance I got a double from a single variety.
Here's the double.

Here's the single which it always flowers, unless the double appears.

Thanks Robert
I'm really wondering just how much that goes on.
I don't know if that classified it as a sport or not.

Nederland, TX(Zone 9a)

It's a good possibility. Mark that branch and see if it continues with other blooms. If so it would be considered. I would then do some cuttings from the branch and see how the blooms go from there. Sports can come from 1 branch consistently while the other part of the plant has normal blooms.

Hi,

Would you please explain what a sport is? I've seen 'sport' in different CV names and based on this conversation I get the gist but I'd love to know for sure.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

They call a sport a flower that is different from the rest of the plants flowers.
I'll do that now Robert!
Good Idea!

Emerald Hills, CA(Zone 9b)

thanks Tropicman, so if you get the same sport off a branch and you root the branch, the plant would be a sport of xxxxxx? or does the term only refer to individual blooms?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Well I think it's just name that bloom,if I root the stem with the sport, and there is no other like it anywhere,I guess you get to name it,what ever you want to,and have it patented.

Hey All,

Basically it is the name of the CV and then sport added. Since on most all of the hybrids the parentage is documented this is usually the way it goes.

El Capitolio was first a red bloom and then it took 2 directions and sported off into a peach and then a yellow.

So now we have El Capitolio Sport

Someone from galveston was supposed to bring me wood to a Cream that they had shown me but the bush was lost due to the hurricane.

Hope it helps some,
Robert

First variegated foilage I've seen before on a hib & I think the bloom is beautiful too. I'll be on the lookout now for the variegated leaf, I love the different colors it's turned & the leaf edges looks irregular too, like a different plant. Thanks for posting it.

I also have just a white and green variegated, but it has yet to bloom this season.if memory serves me it has the red single flower .
