I have a Brugmansia that has been in the same spot for three years. Today it sprouted two different colors from the same stem. How can that be? I would understand different sides of the plant, because of the fertilizer or something, but this was the same branch. Has this happened to anyone else? What is going on?
Two colored Brugmansia???
Many Brug flowers start out white then gradually take on color. It looks like the flower on the lower right hand side is older with the other one just opening.
I have one that did the same thing and the same colors. Only the pink was darker. I can't find my cd that has the pix otherwise I would post it. And I got the cutting from a DGer.
Thanks bettydee, I have seen them change colors before but never this complete of a contrast. I have about 10 bushes and none of them have done this on one branch. I've seen color depth be different but never solid white and pink. I will have to look at it again tonight to see if it changed to pink.
purpbutfly I got this from a DGer six or seven years ago when I first got the Brugmansia craze. Down here there are a few people who are interested. Most want Olenanders, or something easy. I have noticed them popping up in greenhouses lately but all of them are one or two colors.
I need to get some of the newer colors into my group and will start watching for cuttings in October from the groups, if that is still happening at DG now?
Thanks for the input!
Mine starts out yellow then turns pinkish I'd like to have a true yellow and a red.
Well, keep me in mind because I will have lots of cuttings to trade. I have a dark yellow NOID, and 3 others that I received from a dear friend. This year will be the first for them to bloom. I will post pix of them when that happens. Right now I have about 15 brugs that I just transplanted. Alot of cuttings from dark yellow and the pink tipped one.
Here is a pix of my dark yellow NOID
Yes of course, lol but I will have to wait until they bloom to see which plant is which. They got all mixed up when I moved and dumb me I didn't label them.
I root mine in water. I tried the root hormone trick and out of 10 cuttings only 1 made it. So I root them in water, now then transplant to peat pots, then into bigger pots once they get going good.
I started mine in water...doing 6 inch cuttings... water cup for 2 weeks (with fish tank bubbler, they have lil white nubbs on the ends, so I dipped in root hormone, and set gently in loose soil, watered gently, have them sitting outside in shade. The two weeks they were in the water cup, they all started budding leaves so I figured it was time. AGAIN... still keeping fingers crossed!
Why the fish tank bubbler? I just stuck them in water and in a few days they had the little white nubs so I knew I was going to have roots soon.
not sure *LOL* just something I was told that was to help keep the water fresher so only changing every 3-5 days instead of couple days so it doesn't go stagnet..
Oh, I didn't even do that, lol. I changed it about once a week, and my cuttings did great.
I have no luck with root hormone either, but if any of you lived close by I could load a big bush in your truck tonight! I keep having to move them because they get too big and lean over into the Chihuahua exercise pen. I have a very intoxicated Chihuahua in the Vet today. I don't think she ate any Brugmansia, I think she ate a geiko/lizard with a blue tail. I moved the black bamboo out into their pen with concrete to keep it contained, but it is also out of control! I don't have time to mail cuttings or plants because I'm too busy digging them up and moving them around! I put one dangerously close to the neighbors yard yesterday, hoping she will enjoy their scent and ask for a few plants (forget cuttings! I need to move some PLANTS) LOL.
The cuttings do best for me if I take them in the Fall, root them in water, then transfer them to potting soil. Then into the ground. However, I have also had luck with just going straight to the ground.
And on the flip side I have had established plants die and never come back! The weather is so mild here, that I don't have to dig them up every year like I had to in Efland.
On the business of over wintering----I put all my pieces in white plastic buckets with a small amount of water-----added a little hydrogen peroxide------and never changed the water-----only added a little as it evaporated. I probably had an 80% survival rate when I started planting in March. The enclosed porch where they were located stayed about 50 degrees all winter.

I did more cuttings today... but bigger ones.
Cut 6 stalks.. 3 ft. each. Bucket of rain water sitting around back in the shade...so I just stood them up in the bucket. I did trim most of the leaves from the bottom, but left a few at the top of each one. If I just leave it alone... do you think I might have a good chance?? ((as long as it doesn't dry out of course)).. if it rains more.. will that be bad?? or can it not have too much water??
I bet your brug standards will do great out there in that bucket of rain water I have some cuttings in my outside water fountain little thing, and when it rains everything in it looks even happier.. we have hard water here.. I do put a couple drops of peroxide in my water everywhere tho..
I was just going to leave them out there while I go on vacation... ((will have someone check them to make sure they don't dry out)). will it matter if it rains and fills the bucket up more with water?? (other than possibly growing roots 1/2 way up) *LOL*
I wouldn't worry about it raining more if it were me in your shoes... but that is me!
