Hummingbirds & Lillies

McLean, VA(Zone 6b)

This afternoon I was outside looking at the garden when a hummingbird buzzed by me. He went directly to the lillies, and began to sip from each one. Some apparently had more liquid that others because several times he actually landed and his wings stopped for several beats.

I have several clumps for lillies through the front yard, and he visited two seperate clumps while I was watching. I have never seen hummingbirds visit the lillies before. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me. Later on, we had two visitors at the feeder.

This a picture of one of the groups of lillies.

This is a view looking down the walkway. You can see the clumps of bright red. I think there are four groups in all - two of each side of the walkway.

I do think there are a few that will attract them. My hummers check them out put don't feed at them.

I remember a past discussion about this. Someone posted a picture showing the lilly's nectar tubes. Not all lillies have them but I guess if they do the hummers and butterflys will nectar on them. Wish I could remember where that was.

I saw him twice today - around 3:00 pm, and again around 7:30 pm. I'll have to make sure that I take my camera out when I am gardening in the future. Same behavior, he went from lilly to lilly, so clearly he was getting something of value. Later he was at the hummingbird mint, which made sense.

Nice red lilies for the HBs, anyway! I'm sure they can spot them from miles around and then zero in on your garden for other nectar flowers too! Your milkweed looks lush, too! Well, your whole garden, really! I bet the pollinators are having a ball at your place!

Are you getting a good show of BFs? I'm not and I'm getting frustrated, but our Asclepias incarnatas a just about ready to bloom and then I think we'll see lots. At least I hope so!
