our Female Boat-tailed Grackles don't look that yellow in the breast but could be

Yes ... Female Boat-tailed Grackle. It does look more yellow; but I think that's just the lighting. Here's one from out my way.

Interesting Boat-tailed should be as far inland as Houston, they're mainly coastal. That far inland, one would more expect Great-tailed Grackle. But the brown eye confirms it as a Boat-tail, of the Gulf Coast subspecies.

NM_J's has a white iris, and is a Great-tailed (as would be expected in New Mexico).

I've gotten shots in Florida of the Boat-tail Grackle and didn't think they would be in Texas that is the reason I needed confirmation. I thought they were far too.

Thanks for the correction. Now I need to go through all my grackle pics and check for the eye color.

If they're all from NM, they should all be Great-tailed, as Boat-tailed doesn't occur anywhere further west than the Texas coast.

Boat-tailed extends from about Corpus Christi up to New York.
